Letizia Battaglia was one of the most important Italian photographers of this century.

Just over a year after her passing, which occurred on April 13 of last year, at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, the exhibition “Letizia Battaglia Senza Fine” was inaugurated, a grand tribute to the photographer who dedicated her life and career to civic engagement and causes.

“Letizia Battaglia Senza Fine” will be open until November 5.

Letizia Battaglia: biographical notes

Letizia Battaglia was born in Palermo on March 5, 1935.

Throughout her career, which began in 1969 at the age of 34, she narrated Sicily by capturing moments that became part of history, especially during the years of lead – starting from 1974 – such as the assassination of Piersanti Mattarella or that of Judge Cesare Terranova.

However, Letizia Battaglia quickly became an internationally renowned photographer not only for being the “photographer of the mafia” or as she preferred to be called, “humble photographer of Palermitan tragedies“, but also for her ability to capture the traditions of her city, its faces, neighborhoods, and streets.

“Letizia Battaglia Senza Fine”

“Letizia Battaglia Senza Fine” unfolds through the Baths of Caracalla with ninety-two photographs, installed on crystal stands as if they were elements of a forest.

The exhibition features the shots for which Letizia Battaglia became a symbol.

Images as tools to denounce the wounds caused by terrorism, the trails of blood and death, the dramatic booms orchestrated by the mafia in Sicily during the Seventies and Eighties.

The exhibition is an opportunity to admire the shots of Battaglia, in black and white because they seek truth rather than conventional beauty.

The exhibition concludes with a shot from 2020 of Olimpia, a young mother on the beach of Mondello.
