Giulio Paolini is exhibiting at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca until July 15, 2023 with the exhibition Giulio Paolini A come Accademia.

Paolini and Conceptual Art

Giulio Paolini, born in 1940, is an Italian artist and one of the most important representatives of Arte Povera.

His artistic research is particularly distinguished by its interest in the conceptual.

His first solo exhibition, held in Rome in 1964, took place at the Galleria La Salita, where, for example, a series of raw panels were presented leaning against the walls, suggesting the idea of an exhibition still being set up, not yet completed.

Giulio Paolini A come Accademia

Giulio Paolini A come Accademia, promoted and organized by the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, opens just a few months after the artist was awarded the prestigious Praemium Imperiale for Painting, given to Paolini as further recognition for his artistic research, in Tokyo in 2022.

The artist exhibits six new works specifically created for the spaces of Palazzo Carpegna.

In the exhibition, the public is guided through a conceptual itinerary composed of various media including painting, photography, and sculpture, capable of creating a space that is both analytical and poetic.

The exhibition analyzes art in its essential components such as the artist, the work, the institution, the audience, and the relationship with history – hosted not by chance within the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca.

The aim is also to show the process of creating the work, in which the past simultaneously represents the future of artistic creation and the very foundation upon which it is built.

Giulio Paolini more than others best expresses the dualism that links the work to the word, beauty to the artist’s gaze, understanding to the audience’s reading and questions the meaning and current value of academic teaching.
