At the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, the exhibition Vita Dulcis. Fear and Desire in the Roman Empire is on display until August 27, 2023.

Vita Dulcis is an exhibition project born from a collaboration between the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the National Roman Museum and Francesco Vezzoli, a renowned contemporary artist.

The exhibition is a fusion of contemporary art by Vezzoli, Roman history through works from the National Roman Museum, and cinema with video excerpts from famous films such as Cabiria, a 1914 film scripted by Gabriele D’Annunzio, Satyricon by Federico Fellini, Gladiator by Ridley Scott, and more recent productions.

VITA DULCIS aims to offer visitors the vital intensity and authentic passion that the exhibited artifacts can evoke, immersing them in a suggestive setup that interacts with the contemporary brought by Vezzoli.

Vita Dulcis, as mentioned, also features cinema, which represents the ideal completion of the exhibition narrative.

Among all the visual arts, cinema has been the medium that has most utilized and celebrated the historical period of ancient Rome, conveying as much as possible the truth, passion, stories, psychologies, atmospheres, and colors.

The same Vezzoli has always celebrated the Seventh Art as the “medium” of choice for interpreting reality and as the most powerful emotional and narrative reference in contemporary debate.

It is no coincidence that one of his most famous works, Trailer for a Remake of Gore Vidal’s Caligula, combines cinema and the ancient to offer a representation of the contemporary degeneration of power.
