The Marche in recent years have become an increasingly popular destination for many people’s summer holidays.

From the beaches of Conero to the nature reserves, the Marche are certainly establishing themselves as a high-profile destination, but beyond the scenic attractions, The Marche also offer a significant cultural heritage.

Here are our recommendations on which museums to visit in the Marche.

Table of Contents

Pinacoteca Civica Francesco Podesti

The Pinacoteca Civica Francesco Podesti in Ancona is located in the historic Palazzo Bosdari and houses one of the most important collections in the Marche, boasting absolute masterpieces including the “Pala Gozzi” by Tiziano Vecellio and other works by numerous artists.

The Museum also hosts a collection of 20th-century works, featuring pieces by Bartolini, Bucci, Cagli, Trubbiani, Cucchi and other contemporary artists. The new layout of the Pinacoteca in Ancona includes a section dedicated to temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists.

State Tactile Museum Omero

The State Tactile Museum Omero promotes a multisensory experience of cultural heritage. Housed in the 18th-century halls of the Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona, it serves as a three-dimensional encyclopedia of art history.

Its collection systematically documents plastic and sculptural art from all eras: from lifelike copies of classical Greece, Michelangelo and Canova to original sculptures from the rich contemporary section featuring, among others, De Chirico, Marini, Martini, Messina, Pistoletto and many more.

Casa di Leopardi in Recanati

Casa Leopardi is the birthplace of Giacomo Leopardi and the ancient residence of his family.

Visitors can move through the rooms of the Leopardi Library, where Giacomo studied.

The more intimate spaces related to the Poet’s life are also open to the public. The museum is an exhibition path divided into ten historical-thematic sections that allow visitors to “walk” alongside Giacomo in his history, through a rich heritage of objects, documents, and writings.

Civic Museum Villa Colloredo di Recanati

The Museum is housed in a villa that belonged to the Counts Colloredo Mels, a noble family of Friulian origin.

The archaeological section collects artifacts from the Eneolithic settlement of Fontenoce and from the Iron Age. Of particular interest is the picture gallery that gathers works from across the region.

A section of the museum is dedicated to the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries, and finally, a small collection of 177 ceramics by Rodolfo Ceccaroni. These last collections are a testament to the art and local painting of Recanati.
