Hot Spot Caring for a Burning World

Hot Spot Caring for a Burning World is at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome until February 26, 2023.

The exhibition takes its title from the eponymous work by Mona Hatoum, a contemporary Lebanese artist who created a large iron and neon installation titled “Hot Spot III”: it features the planet Earth illuminated by a red light symbolizing the conflicts that make it incandescent.

Hot Spot Caring for a Burning World: the exhibition path

The exhibition path highlights the poetic strength of art through the selected works that delve into the climate crisis and the disastrous situation we find ourselves in, which is inexorably worsening.

Hot Spot Caring for a Burning World aims to stimulate reflection and raise awareness of the perspective of imminent disaster, to imagine a different relationship with the planet.

Hot Spot Caring for a Burning World is specifically created for the spaces of the Gallery with works by international artists and from different generations such as:

Pier Paolo Calzolari, Louise Bourgeois, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Davide Rivalta, Andrea Santarlasci, Allan Sekula, Daphne Wright, Rachel Youn, Luiz Zerbini and many others.

If among the first works visible in the exhibition is the burning globe by Mona Hatoum, it contrasts with the glacial panel by Pier Paolo Calzolari, another side of the same coin that translates into evocative images the environmental catastrophe – it does not aim to be a declaration of surrender, nor an introspective contemplation of the advancing evil.
