The Catalan city offers a busy calendar of events that celebrate contemporary art, photography and digital art. In addition, in the year that celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso (1973-2023), numerous events and exhibitions dedicated to the artist take place in Barcelona and throughout Spain.

MACBA Collection: Prelude. Poetic Intention, at Macba Museum until mid 2024
At the Macba Museum in Barcelona you can visit Collection: Prelude. Poetic Intention . The exhibition largely involves works acquired in recent years, placing them in dialogue with the existing collection, but also includes works entering the Museum for the first time. Thus a new story is born: one that contains missing elements and focuses on alternative discourses, common spaces and possible scenarios, in order to question and redefine the relationships between artistic practices and their subjects.
Mey Rahola (1897-1959). La nova fotògrafa, atMuseu nacional d’art de Catalunya until September 11th
The Museo Nacional d’Art de Catalunya exhibits, until the 11 September, Mey Rahola one of the first women to establish herself in the field of artistic photography in Spain. Mey Rahola she participated in the construction of the new role of women in the public sphere during the Second Republic: an independent, travelling, empathetic and ironic woman.
Carmen Calvo, at Museo Picasso until 3rd September
Carmen Calvo is one of the most important Spanish visual artists. At Museo Picasso, until 3rd September, paintings from her early days interpreted and manipulated by objects or pieces of paint are exhibited. The tour continues in a room that demonstrates the charm of Calvo with the arrangement of archaeological objects and how they relate to history. At the end of the exhibition, a closed room can be seen, emulating a cage and which is one of the most remarkable elements of the entire exhibition due to its critical force.
Mirò – Picasso al Picasso Museum & Foundation Mirò, from 19 October to 25 February 2024 – planned
Starting in October, two of Barcelona’s most important museums – the Picasso Museum and the Mirò Foundation – will host a joint exhibition on the friendship between Picasso and Mirò. Will be exhibited artworks that highlight the similarities between the two and the relationship with the city of Barcelona. The exhibition falls on the fiftieth anniversary of Picasso’s death, for which many exhibitions and events are planned in Spain, and also on the fortieth year of Mirò’s death.
Dragons, Legends of Fire, at Casa Amatller until September 2024
Dragons, Legends of Fire is the temporary exhibition of the new Digital Museum of Casa Amatller dedicated to the dragons of Modernism, with a different vision of the history of Barcelona and its relationship with this fantastic creature. “Modernist Dragons, Legends of Fire” makes us travel the world through two very powerful audiovisual experiences.
