The must-see exhibitions for summer 2022: from German expressionists, through photography to Canova.

We tell you about them.

Expressions and Truths at the Imago Museum until October 2, 2022

At theImago Museum in Pescara, until October 2, 2002, there is Expressions and Truths: an exceptional exhibition with over 70 works that narrate the avant-garde art of the early 20th century, the Die Brücke group with examples of print graphics and woodcuts created by Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff, Heckel, and Pechstein.

Expressions and Truths also showcases Alfred Kubin, Oskar Kokoschka, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, and Käthe Kollwitz, among the representatives of “expressionistic realism” and many other artists such as Carl Kaspar, Frans Masereel, Karel Černy, Gerhard Marcks.

The works also narrate the period from expressionism to the 1960s with the woodcuts of Chin Sung and Stanislaw Czaika, the works from the Werkstatt Rixdorfer Drucke and the group of 5 inks of china and colored chalk and a watercolor by Schmidt-Rottluff.

At the conclusion of Expressions and Truths, here is the portrait of Schmidt-Rottluff created by Vincenzo Celi, a Sicilian artist. The painter Giosetta Fioroni, a representative of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, also pays homage to the Berlin period of the Expressionists with the work “Berliner”.

Oliviero Toscani at Palazzo Albergati until September 4, 2022

At Palazzo Albergati in Bologna, Arthemisia presents from April 8 to September 4, 2022 the exhibition Oliviero Toscani. 80 years as a situationist curated by Nicolas Ballario.

This is 100 photographs that tell the creative power and career of Oliviero Toscani, one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century.

“80 Years as a Situationist” celebrates the photographer who sparked discussions worldwide on issues such as racism, the death penalty, AIDS, war, sex, violence, anorexia, and much more.

The exhibition features all his most famous campaigns, which have shaken public opinion through billboards and newspaper pages: the famous poster Jesus Jeans ‘Follow me if you love me’, Kiss between priest and nun from 1992, the Three Hearts White/Black/Yellow from 1996, No-Anorexia from 2007 and then the images created for fashion featuring Donna Jordan, Claudia Schiffer, Monica Bellucci.

The exhibition also includes dozens of his iconic portraits such as those of Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Carmelo Bene, Federico Fellini and the greatest figures in culture from the 1970s onwards. Additionally, a room is dedicated to the project Human Race, with which Oliviero Toscani traveled to hundreds of squares around the world to photograph anyone who wished, creating the largest photographic archive on the morphological and social differences of humanity, with over 10,000 portraits.

Poetics Everyday and Imaginary in Italian Art between the 19th and 20th Century at the Palazzo delle Paure in Lecco until November 20, 2022

In the halls of Palazzo delle Paure and Villa Manzoni in Lecco, the exhibition Poetiche. Quotidiano e immaginario nell’arte italiana tra Ottocento e Novecento is hosted until November 20, 2022.

Poetiche. Quotidiano e immaginario nell’arte italiana tra Ottocento e Novecento tells of a transitional moment in Italian art, at the turn of the two centuries, between Social Realism, Divisionism, and Symbolism, through more than 90 works by artists who addressed social issues and the everyday, as well as the Symbolist imaginary, such as Giovanni Segantini, Angelo Morbelli, and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo.

The exhibition considers the Italian art of the second half of the nineteenth century, when a deeper interest in social issues emerged, and artists depicted such themes with ruthless objectivity, without any complacency or sweetening, with an attitude close to Realism, just as had occurred in literature.

This initiative is the first event in a series of 5 exhibitions, titled “Percorsi nel Novecento,” which will explore the Italian cultural scene in the first six decades of the 20th century until November 2024.

David Medalla Parables of Friendship at Museion until September 14, 2022

David Medalla: Parables of Friendship is the first major international exhibition dedicated to the work of Filipino artist, poet, and activist David Medalla, organized after his sudden passing in December 2020.

David Medalla: Parables of Friendship is organized by Museion in collaboration with Bonner Kunstverein, and in close cooperation with the David Medalla Archive in Berlin. The exhibition narrates the vital legacy, spirit, energy, and radicality of the artist’s practice.

David Medalla: Parables of Friendship is curated by Steven Cairns and Fatima Hellberg with Bart van der Heide and designed by Michael Kleine Studio.

Visitors can admire drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, neon works, kinetic art, participatory works, and performances created over more than seventy years of career. Many unpublished works and some restored pieces will also be displayed for the first time.

Several themes intertwine in Medalla’s work: the intersection of art and life, ecology, cultural identity, sexuality, work ethics, and his personal experiences of travel and transition.

In the Time of Canova: An Umbrian Itinerary at Palazzo Baldeschi until November 1, 2022

In the Time of Canova, an Umbrian itinerary is the exhibition-itinerary that unfolds between Palazzo Baldeschi and MUSA, Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia until November 1, 2022.

The two exhibition venues in the historic city center are part of a broad project promoted by the Academy of Fine Arts “Pietro Vannucci” and the Perugia Foundation, which have previously collaborated on shared initiatives, and curated by Stefania Petrillo, a professor at the University of Perugia.

In the Time of Canova: An Umbrian Itinerary focuses on the core of Canova’s plasters preserved at the MUSA, Museum of the Academy of Perugia. The exhibition enhances the artistic and cultural context in which these works were created, narrating an Umbria inscribed within broader dynamics and a vibrant network of relationships.

There are many novelties in this exhibition conceived as a journey through time, featuring over one hundred works that will tell the story of “the sister arts”: sculpture, architecture, painting.

The itinerary of the exhibition – both real and ideal – will have small and large “stopping points” around works and protagonists of a season culminated in the particularly influential relationship that Canova had between 1812 and 1822 with the Academy of Fine Arts of Perugia, which he guided in its choices, supporting the appointment of directors such as Carlo Labruzzi, Tommaso Minardi, Giovanni Sanguinetti.
