On the occasion of the inauguration on April 23, of the Venice Biennale 2022, the city is preparing to become the stage for the national and international artistic scene.

However, the city is not just the Biennale, but also the theater of important exhibitions: here are those that tell Venice beyond the Biennale.

Surrealism and Magic. The Enchanted Modernity – Peggy Guggenheim Collection from April 9 to September 26, 2022

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, in collaboration with the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, presents Surrealism and Magic. The Enchanted Modernity.

The exhibition gathers about sixty works from international institutions and private collections.

Magic, esotericism, the occult, and mythology intertwine here thanks to the metaphysical works of Giorgio de Chirico, the iconic Bridal Attire by Max Ernst, and the works of Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo.

Surrealism, intrinsically linked to magic, manages to transform the artists themselves into magicians, visionaries, and alchemists who dedicate themselves to the world of the dreamlike, among them we find: Victor Brauner, Salvador Dalì, Reneè Magritte, Yves Tanguy.

Anish Kapoor – Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia from April 20 to October 9, 2022

The Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice hosts Anish Kapoor with a major retrospective of the artist, showcasing key works from his career alongside unpublished works created for the occasion using carbon nanotube technology.

The exhibition, curated by the General Director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Taco Dibbits, is already anticipated to be a success.

The works of Anish Kapoor engage in dialogue with the Renaissance pieces in the collections of the Gallerie dell’Accademia and address themes such as space, light, color, and perspective, topics that are also very dear to Venetian Renaissance painting.

Anselm Kiefer – Palazzo Ducale di Venezia until October 29, 2022

Anselm Kiefer is at the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia until October 29, 2022.

The German artist arrives in the lagoon city with what has been described as a flagship exhibition. The works of Kiefer, created specifically to be displayed in Venice, communicate with those of Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese and Bellini present in the same rooms.

Anselm Kiefer has thus, by his own admission, sought to challenge himself by “painting over” the masterpieces of these masters and immersing himself for two years – the time it took – in the history of Venice, reading and studying its backgrounds and contradictions.

Marlene Dumas Open – End – Palazzo Grassi until January 8, 2023

At Palazzo Grassi is Marlene Dumas, with the exhibition open – end, curated by Carolina Bourgeois and open until January 8, 2023.

The solo exhibition of the South African artist is part of the program of monographic exhibitions dedicated to great contemporary artists that have alternated with thematic exhibitions of the Pinault Collection since 2012.

There are one hundred works by Marlene Dumas that narrate her pictorial production from 1984 to the present and navigate through themes crucial to her such as the eternal opposites love and death, innocence and guilt, violence and tenderness, but also ecstasy, fear, and despair.
