Palazzo Merulana in Rome hosts until July 3rd, coinciding with Pride month, the exhibition UltraQueer, curated by Twm Factory, in collaboration with Circolo di Cultura Omosessuale Mario Mieli, Roma Pride, and Inclusive Medicine.

The aim of UltraQueer is to explore the Queer dimension through new artistic languages, promoting the expressive freedom of gender identities and sexual orientations while valuing the creativity of artists belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.

What Does Queer Mean

The term Queer, commonly used since the nineties, was traditionally translated from English as “eccentric” or “unusual.”

Today it refers to members of the LGBTQ+ community who do not identify with a defined gender and/or sexual orientation but do not identify as either cisgender or heterosexual.

Ultra Queer at Palazzo Merulana

UltraQueer, through the works of various contemporary artists on display, aims to investigate the queer dimension through new artistic languages.

This exhibition has the great merit of bringing the voice of the LGBTQIA+ community into a decidedly institutional context.

Therefore, the significance of such a gesture should not be underestimated: it represents an important step forward, the beginning of a journey towards the recognition of protagonists, stories, and expressive forms that have been submerged, for the first time, in such an organic and scientifically supported manner, in Rome and in Italy within a museum.

UltraQueer at Palazzo Merulana intentionally questions the traditional heteropatriarchal binary system, instead encouraging freedom of gender expression.

This is an extremely inclusive and multidisciplinary project featuring a selection of works by young artists from the LGBTQIA+ community, including: Agnes Questionmark, Davide Viggiano, Filippo Chilelli, Sara Lorusso, Jacopo Paglione, Chiara Bruni, Erica Borgato, Nicola Napoli, Valerio Conti, and Volker Hermes.

Additionally, thanks to the archive of the Circolo Mario Mieli, the exhibition delves into the historical legacy of the homosexual liberation movement in Rome.

UltraQueer at Palazzo Merulana is also accompanied by a series of meetings and a set of questionnaires aimed at building a network of social realities that promote inclusivity and freedom of expression for all.
