The Sonosfera® in Pesaro presents an innovative program dedicated to Raphael!
The Sonosfera®, one of the most innovative jewels of the cultural heritage of Pesaro UNESCO Creative City of Music, continues to amaze and fascinate the public.
In addition to the already visible program Fragments of Extinction in the Climate Clock, about the endangered sound ecosystems and the state of health of the planet, starting from January 15, it is possible to experience a unique sensory and cognitive experience dedicated to Raphael!

Developed for the fifth centenary of the death of the Divine Painter and as part of Pesaro’s candidacy for Italian Capital of Culture 2024, Raphael in Sonosfera® is a work of digital linguistic innovation designed to tell the art of the master through three-dimensional sound and 360° vision, allowing for an intimate connection with the most spiritual, and ultimately most human, part of Raphael.
Thanks to extraordinary technology, the Sonosfera®, a technological amphitheater for deep listening of ecosystems and music, allows one to immerse in the beauty of one of Raphael’s most significant masterpieces: the fresco cycle of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Museums.

The entire Room with The Disputation of the Sacrament, The Parnassus, The School of Athens and the Cardinal and Theological Virtues and the Law, is reconstructed on the large circular projection space and especially listened to through the musical deciphering of the symbolic levels in the frescoes: the sound of the painted musical instruments, that of natural elements, the setting in the architectural acoustics of a mass by Josquin Desprez, contemporary with the frescoes, and a sonnet by Raphael himself, specially engraved, along with the electroacoustic composition.

The project is the work of David Monacchi, already the author of the Sonosfera®, and Simone Sorini, assisted by a team of extraordinary musicians and digital artists who have meticulously explored and reconstructed the frescoes, starting from the structural phases of sinopia red, then preparatory cartoons, to the emergence of color and the enlargement of the two famous mirror systems: The Disputation of the Sacrament and The School of Athens.
These last two surround the audience, seated in the cavea, placing them in the heart of the work with a definition never attempted before, thanks to the ultra-high-resolution images provided by the Vatican Museums. The sound comes from a spherical geometry speaker system, interconnected to recreate an acoustic field very close to reality, allowing for a musical experience like no other existing place. The project represents an attempt to experience the history of art in a completely new key, that of sound.

The historical music has been performed by an ensemble of instrumental and vocal specialists in the repertoire of the early 1500s, ensuring that everything is as faithful as possible to the instruments depicted in the fresco. For example, we find the arm lyre in the hands of Orpheus, as well as classical instruments like the Athenian lyre, the Roman cithara, and the archaic flute. Additionally, the electronic music has been conceived and composed based on the geometric/mathematical representations found in the frescoes. The Tetraktis, a sacred decade for the Pythagoreans, for instance, meticulously painted by Raphael in the hands of Telauge, illustrates the primary intervals (octave, fifth, fourth) that will become the foundation of the Western musical system, and serves as the core for the electroacoustic composition of the entire work in Sonosfera®.

The program of Raffaello in Sonosfera® alternates with “Fragments of Extinction in the Climate Clock” on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (visiting times 10:30 AM and 4 PM for Fragments, 11:30 AM and 5 PM for Raffaello) for schools and groups on other days and times, always by reservation.
