In all nations today, there is a discussion about Climate Change, and Pesaro is doing its part to raise collective awareness as much as possible.

Since January 2020, the Marche city has hosted the Sonosfera ® within the Civic Museums, a theater for deep listening of ecosystems and music, unique in the world, created for the project ‘Fragments of Extinction – The Sound Heritage of Ecosystems’, which obtained international patent in 2014 by its creator David Monacchi, professor at the Rossini Conservatory.

The project studies and proposes the soundscapes of primary equatorial forests recorded by Monacchi, using innovative three-dimensional technologies during expeditions in the Amazon, Africa, and Borneo. The experience in Sonosfera ® allows one to experience live and in real-time the sound of these unspoiled ecosystems, which have the highest biodiversity and are the oldest on Earth. The audience sits in a cavea with 45 speakers, positioned in the spherical geometry of the acoustically perfect geode, capable of reproducing an enveloping soundscape, accompanied by 360° high-resolution images. An extraordinary and emotional sound and visual immersion that has been updated this year with a new series of scientific data on the current state of the living planet and the dangerous changes in the biosphere already underway (sources: UN, IPCC, IPBES, IUCN, Bioscience, WWF-ZSL).

The documentation of the emergency is linked to the novelty of the Climate Clock, which, born from a group of activists in New York, is becoming a global movement. In 2020, Monacchi oversaw its reworking and construction, and it is now located outside the Civic Museums, on the facade of Palazzo Mosca. Another important tool that was inaugurated on September 24, during the ‘Youth4Climate2021: Driving Ambition’ event in Milan and in anticipation of the COP26 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to be held in November in Glasgow.

Second in Italy after the one installed on the facade of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and already present in major cities around the world, the clock tells us what to do, and by when, to save the Earth from overheating. The Climate Clock is based on recent science and provides the most up-to-date summary numbers on emissions and timelines to understand the urgency of the systemic change that needs to be implemented and the direction to follow. The deadline measures the time available for humanity to exhaust CO2 emissions in the atmosphere before exceeding the critical threshold of +1.5°, meaning reaching, in about 7 years, emissions close to zero; but there is also the lifeline that measures the share of energy produced from renewable sources towards the desired ecological transition that is our salvation: currently at 12.4% and increasing, but much more slowly than necessary.

Given the drastic changes in climate and natural habitats, it is now of fundamental importance to bring to everyone’s attention what science and climate justice require us to do immediately to avoid the ‘sixth mass extinction’. The narrative of scientific data, through the mobile theater Sonosfera® and the Climate Clock, has this purpose; it indeed allows us to touch the emotional chords of the collective environmental consciousness, especially of the youth who will have to manage our legacy.
The new content of the Sonosfera ® renamed ‘Fragments of Extinction in the Climate Clock’ has been selected by the Ministry of Ecological Transition to be included in the ‘All4Climate-Italy2021’ Program, the official calendar of Italian events aimed at promoting 2021 as the year of climate ambition. A significant recognition for Pesaro, already a UNESCO Creative City of Music and now at the forefront of launching a message of awareness about the planetary biodiversity crisis.

Lastly, as decided by the Council of Ministers on October 7, in the white zone, cultural venues have returned to host the public at 100% of their capacity, and thus the Sonosfera ® has increased its attendance, welcoming groups and classes from schools again. Visits are available for the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (visiting shifts at 10:30, 11:30, 16:00, 17:00; from June to September, the afternoon times are 16:30, 17:30) for schools and groups on other days and times, always by reservation.
