Eve Arnold, eclectic photographer

Eve Arnold was the first woman, alongside Inge Morath, to work for Magnum Photos in 1951.

Throughout her career, nothing short of extraordinary, it was her determination, curiosity, and desire to escape any stereotype or category of any kind that allowed her to produce such eclectic works.

Eve Arnold, in addition to capturing the great movie stars, including Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Marlene Dietrich, was also the author of investigative reports where she addressed themes and issues central to the public debate of yesterday and today.

The exhibition with its 170 images, many of which have never been exhibited before, presents the complete work of the photographer starting from the first black and white shots of New York in the 1950s to the last color works, created when she was already advanced in age.

The photographs of Arnold tackle themes and issues such as racism in the United States, women’s emancipation, and the interaction between different cultures of the world.

Eve Arnold: a tribute to women’s emancipation

The career of Arnold can be seen as a tribute to women’s emancipation.

Arnold was indeed particularly sensitive to the condition of women in her time.

The subjects of her photos are workers, mothers, girls, divas, nuns, models, students. The photographer never slips into stereotypes or categorizations: she only wants to know, understand, and tell.

The exhibition Eve Arnold in Turin aims to celebrate the work of this author, also highlighted through numerous archival documents, texts, contact sheets, books, and magazines that enrich the discovery of a true legend of photography.
