From April 1, the Guggenheim in Venice will host an exhibition dedicated to the Venetian painter, Edmondo Bacci, titled Edmondo Bacci. The Energy of Light.

The exhibition, which runs until September 18, celebrates the art of Bacci, an artist who participated in Spatialism and is now exhibited in the most important museums around the world.

Edmondo Bacci, Venice and Spatialism

Bacci was born on July 21, 1913 in Venice, the city where he studied and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1953, he signed the manifesto of Spatialism, also known as the spatial movement or spatial art.

This is an artistic movement that emerged in 1946, founded by Lucio Fontana in Argentina in partnership with the Cavallino Gallery in Venice, which had already established a strong connection with the Apollinaire Gallery in Milan, Fontana’s gallery.

The Encounter with Peggy Guggenheim

In the mid-1950s, Bacci was noticed by Peggy Guggenheim, an American patron and collector who was a Venetian by adoption, who, recognizing his value and revolutionary aspect, became his supporter.

The exhibition Edmondo Bacci. The Energy of Light aims to analyze and delve into the most lyrical part of Bacci’s artistic research, reaching its peak that inevitably coincides with Spatialism.

Bacci worked alongside Tancredi and Vedova and is undoubtedly one of the few artists in the Italian scene to quickly assimilate the possibilities of a new abstraction, linking contemporary trends from Europe and the United States with a unique style and personal vision.

Edmondo Bacci. The Energy of Light

The exhibition features around eighty works, many of which have never been exhibited before, including paintings and unpublished drawings from the Edmondo Bacci Archive, private collections, and international museums.

Bacci stands out among the artistic excellence of Veneto, thanks to the originality he brings with the generative power of color, the breaking of spatial planes, and the circular rhythm of the brushstroke.

Event #13 R

Edmondo Bacci. The Energy of Light presents a series of fundamental works to understand the unmistakable combination of color and light that so impressed Peggy Guggenheim.

Alfred H. Barr Jr., then director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, was also captivated by Bacci and purchased Event #13 R, from 1953.

The canvas, now part of the New York museum’s collection, is exceptionally returning to Italy to be exhibited to the public for the first time.
