Until spring, there are many exhibitions to visit among those scheduled in Milan for 2023.

Milan offers a rich cultural program, featuring contemporary art exhibitions, modern art, as well as photography exhibitions.

Jheronimus Bosch

Of the Dutch painter, who has gone down in history as one of the most important representatives of the early painting school of the Netherlands, the illustrations of religious concepts and narratives are internationally recognizable.

Throughout his life, his works were collected in the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain.

Little is known about Bosch’s life, but his style, particularly with his macabre and infernal representations, had a wide influence on 16th-century northern art, especially thanks to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, his most famous follower.

Today, Bosch is the master in the representation of humanity’s deepest desires and fears. Unfortunately, attributing works to the artist is particularly difficult because he was often copied, and to this day, only about twenty paintings can claim authorship along with eight drawings.

His most acclaimed works consist of several triptych altarpieces, including the famous Garden of Earthly Delights Triptych, now housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

The exhibition at Palazzo Reale

Milan pays tribute to the great artist and Flemish genius Jheronimus Bosch with the exhibition BOSCH AND ANOTHER RENAISSANCE at Palazzo Reale, open until March 12.

This is a unique exhibition project.

Bosch is indeed the emblem of an ‘alternative’ Renaissance, far from the one governed by the myth of classicism. His art is proof of the existence of a plurality of Renaissances, with artistic centers spread throughout Europe.

The exhibition path includes about one hundred works of art of all kinds: paintings, sculptures, tapestries, engravings, bronzes, and ancient volumes, including around thirty rare and precious objects from wunderkammern.

This corpus features some of the most famous masterpieces of Bosch and works derived from subjects of the Master – never before presented together in a single exhibition.

Bosch, as already mentioned, is the author of very few works universally attributed to him and preserved in museums around the world.

Precisely because they are so rare and precious, his masterpieces rarely leave the museums to which they belong, and even more rarely is there an opportunity to see them gathered in a single exhibition.

The exhibition “Bosch and another Renaissance” puts in dialogue masterpieces traditionally attributed to the Master with important works by other Flemish, Italian, and Spanish masters, in a comparison aimed at explaining to the visitor how the ‘other’ Renaissance – not only Italian and not only Boschian – in contemporary or immediately subsequent years influenced great artists such as Titian, Raphael, Gerolamo Savoldo, Dosso Dossi, El Greco, and many others.

In Milan, however, there is not just Bosch; for all the other must-see exhibitions, we also recommend: Exhibitions in Milan 2023: the five not to be missed.
