Palazzo Reale di Milano presents, until June 25, an exhibition dedicated to the undisputed master of video art, BILL VIOLA.

Born in New York in 1951, Bill Viola is universally known for his experimental works, considered masterpieces of contemporary art.

The Artistic Research and Experimental Art

Bill Viola starts his work from the study of electronic music, the potentials of performance art, and experimental films.

Viola creates works that, thanks to a new artistic language, constantly address life, death, and the intermediate journey, in order to explore a deeper understanding of humanity and its relationship with the environment, the influences of Eastern and Western philosophy, the iconic importance of the natural world, and many other themes.

The Importance of the Journey

The journey, for Viola, is a fundamental requirement at the base of his artistic research.

Drawing inspiration from his travels around the world, he outlines his artistic path by creating works that envelop the observer with compositions and sounds, seeking to represent the infinite possibilities of the psyche and the human soul.

Bill Viola, among his travels, has also spent considerable time in Italy, more precisely in Florence, where he encounters Renaissance art for the first time.

As mentioned, his art arises from study and explores ancient Christian iconography, with particular attention to the medieval, Renaissance, and Mannerist imagery in a continuous dialogue with altarpieces, polyptychs, and votive paintings by ancient artists.

Viola, acting as a director, has also implemented a new composition of the image by constructing elaborate theatrical scenes inspired by the Western historical-artistic tradition, cinematic in the true sense of the word, with settings, actors, stage design, lighting design, and photography.
