The exhibition Backwards Ahead is at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo until February 26, 2023.

Backwards Ahead focuses on a core of works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection that explore the concepts of time, history, and evidence.

Backwards Ahead challenges the notion of linear time, thanks to the multifaceted use of sculpture, photography, and installations by the artists exhibiting.

The exhibition consists of a reflection on what linear time is, on which the conception of Western history is based. This view considers what is “ahead” as a sequence of events without return and what is “backwards” as something that can only be reconstructed through a continuous search for evidence, historical or judicial traces that demonstrate the truth of events.

An exhibition about time

Within Backwards Ahead, artistic perspectives embrace a plural temporality, composed of anachronisms, cyclicality, and multiple dimensions. In this alternative reality, some works address history in light of the ephemeral status of the document, others produce remakes and forgeries, while others establish counter-processes.

The title of the exhibition, Backwards Ahead, derives from the namesake work by artist Kiran Subbaiah, a closed-circuit installation that involves visitors in a delayed control system, overturning the space-time coordinates of those who traverse it.

Among the other artists in the exhibition are Simon Starling and Slavs and Tatars, who interpret time as an economic-productive cycle and as a course destined to repeat in an eternal loop.

Additionally, Liz Glynn, Goshka Macuga, Yinka Shonibare engage with material culture, institutional politics, and the construction of cultural identity, through copying, forgery, and reenactment of the past. Paul Graham, June Crespo, Josh Kline, Andra Ursuţa adopt a forensic register, chasing clues and evidence, ultimately exposing or performing the paradoxical functions of control and discipline organs.

Through various perspectives, the works presented in Backwards Ahead trace circular and oblique motions, advancing and receding. In this continuous movement, they render the flow of time reversible, notifying appeals and judgments, and reimagining the power dynamics between oppressors and the oppressed.
