Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York in 1923 to a middle-class Jewish family. During school, he became interested in art, design, and music, particularly jazz, and in 1940 he enrolled in a degree program in Fine Arts.

After World War II, in which he served as a technician in the United States Army, he resumed his university studies in 1946 and attended painting courses by Hoyt Sherman.

He later enrolled in the Graduate School of Fine Arts, which he completed in 1949.

Pop Art

Roy Lichtenstein was one of the most famous American artists of the Pop Art movement, which emerged in the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The Pop Art movement expresses the society and the collective imagination of the time.

It is an art directed at the masses rather than the individual. The artists who represent it draw inspiration from and reproduce objects of everyday reality, often commercial products.

ROY LICHTENSTEIN. Pop Variations

The exhibition ROY LICHTENSTEIN. Pop Variations at Palazzo Tarasconi presents the key themes in the American artist’s work through a selection of over 50 works that alternate between editions and screen prints, experiments on metal, fabrics, and plastic as well as photographs and videos from prestigious European and American collections.

The exhibition path is organized according to a chronological scheme that coincides with a thematic development.

The exhibition retraces Lichtenstein’s artistic career starting from the ’60s, where we find his themes and genres, from comics and advertising, still life, landscape, incursions into abstraction and the forms of the great masters, two-dimensional interiors, to the series of female nudes.

Pop Variations opens the year that Palazzo Tarasconi dedicates to America and Pop Art, an artistic trend capable of transporting the cultural and commercial evolution of American society of the time onto the plane of color.
