Rembrandt Meets Rembrandt. Dialogues in the Gallery
Rembrandt Meets Rembrandt. Dialogues in the Gallery is the exhibition dedicated to the Dutch genius at the Royal Museums of Turin.
Defined as a dossier exhibition, it celebrates the greatest Dutch master of the seventeenth century, featuring a core of twenty-two works including paintings, drawings, and etchings displayed in the Discovery Space of the Sabauda Gallery.
The exhibition, which will run until April 16, 2023, showcases The Supper at Emmaus from the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris, on loan to the Royal Museums.

The Supper at Emmaus is contrasted with the Portrait of an Old Sleeping Man from the Sabauda Gallery, included in the national collections.
Both works are representative of the youthful phase of Rembrandt and serve as examples of the painter’s mastery in the use of color, the regulation of light, and the poetic conversion of subjects drawn from everyday reality and sacred history.
In the panel from the Sabauda Gallery, the figure of the old man asleep is immersed in an occasionally impenetrable darkness: only the man’s face and hands appear in full light, illuminated by the faint glow of the hearth.
Rembrandt is a master of details
Not by chance does Rembrandt exalt details in his works like no other, intensifying their effect in a deliberately unreal manner.
The appearance of Christ to the apostles is constructed precisely on the contrast between darkness and light, which is also mystical light, an image of divine revelation.
In the two paintings being compared, the realistic depiction of the environment and characters, combined with the expressive and symbolic use of light, recalls the innovations introduced by Caravaggio in sacred painting in the early decades of the seventeenth century, later adopted in schools throughout Europe.
