The MAN in Nuoro Celebrates Picasso’s Guernica
Picasso and Guernica Against All Wars is the major exhibition at the MAN in Nuoro, open until February 19.
The work of Picasso cannot leave Spain, nor can it leave the room where it is displayed at the Reina Sofia Museum.
Only in 1953, Guernica was exhibited in Italy in the Hall of the Caryatids at the Royal Palace of Milan.
The exhibition it was part of was then moved to Rome, but in a reduced format and, above all, without Guernica, which has not entered our country since then.
As mentioned, Guernica no longer travels.
But seventy years after the historic exhibition at the Royal Palace of Milan, the exhibition at the MAN in Nuoro once again commemorates the Italian passage of Guernica, symbolically and artistically fundamental for a generation of artists, art critics, and Italian citizens.
The exhibition tells the importance of Guernica in Picasso’s artistic production and narrates its genesis through the visual storytelling of Dora Maar, photographer and at the time the companion of the Spanish artist.

Picasso and Guernica Against All Wars
Picasso and Guernica Against All Wars is divided into two sections.
The first features Sueño y mentira de Franco, a true graphic counterpart to the great painting.
Around Sueño y mentira de Franco is a significant series of prints, drawings, and paintings that directly relate to the gestation of Guernica or that, having been created in the same period, closely evoke the style and themes of the famous painting.
The second section revolves around the memories of Dora Maar, an eyewitness to Picasso’s work.
Here, a series of poignant and essential snapshots contribute to the philological reconstruction of the creation of Guernica. Photographs by Mario Perroti, dated 1953, taken during the Milan exhibition, are also on display.
