Nineteenth Century on Display

At the GAM – Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Turin the exhibition Ottocento GAM Collections from the Unification of Italy to the Dawn of the Twentieth Century opens.

The exhibition draws works directly from the vault of the Museum to present to the public both the masterpieces of the 19th century.

The display thus offers the opportunity to admire all those works housed on the second floor of the building along with others that have been recently restored.

Nineteenth Century includes seventy-one works among paintings, pastels, large charcoal drawings, marble sculptures, delicate plasters and waxes.

Within the exhibition path, you can find renowned masterpieces such as After the Duel by Antonio Mancini, The Ivy by Tranquillo Cremona, or The Mirror of Life by Pellizza da Volpedo.

Together with them, there are also works never exhibited before, but which in the Nineteenth Century were considered true gems of the modern collection of the Museum: Here is Jerusalem! by Enrico Gamba, or Nobles on a Journey by Francesco Gonin, which, thanks to the research conducted for the exhibition, regains its title: The Guide. Study of Chestnuts from Life.

The path is further enriched with additional meaning, establishing a dialogue between the noble tradition of figure painting and the novelty of landscape research which, in their most free and experimental expressions, were the subject of harsh criticism from the conservative press and the academic institution.

Eight thematic sections guide the visitor through the exhibition path:

Birth of a Collection, New Sensibilities and Research, Landscape Painting at the Civic Museum, From Scapigliatura to Divisionism and Symbolist Research between Painting and Sculpture.

The exhibition also presents a useful insight into the context of the Unification of Italy, which was characterized by a particular artistic, political, and cultural fervor that animated especially Piedmont, during which Turin was elected capital and remained so until 1865 when the title was moved first to Florence and then definitively to Rome in 1871.

Thanks to this scenario, the exhibition path delves into trends, pictorial styles, insights, and social habits of the time, focusing on the moments of transition that greatly influenced the artists of that historical period.

A phase rich in discoveries and enthusiasms compared to our present.
