Rome celebrates contemporary art at the Chiostro del Bramante with CRAZY Madness in Contemporary Art.
The Order of Disorder
Crazy is undoubtedly one of the exhibitions of the year: opened on February 19 and running until January 8, 2023, it showcases 21 internationally renowned artists and 11 site-specific installations.
A dialogue between art and madness: this is what Danilo Eccher, the curator of the exhibition, aimed to highlight.
Fantasy, euphoria, colors, an exhibition without schemes and unpredictable, confirming how creative genius has and should have no limits.
This is the winning combination at the heart of the exhibition’s success that fills the spaces of the cloister.
The Exhibition Path
Starting from the ground floor, the first work on display titled “Passi”, created by Alfredo Pirri, one of the leading figures in Italian contemporary art, has been set up. His Passi, through the reflective surface, can alter the surrounding space and even change the observer’s perception.

Under the colonnade, Teenager Teenager, the fiberglass sculptures by two contemporary Chinese artists, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, have also been placed. The sculptures play on the theme of the constant affirmation of paradox and address various themes such as existential conflicts, the human condition, obsession with death, aging, and violence.

Waterfalls of Colors
At this point, we enter the internal spaces of the kiosk where the other installations alternate among the rooms, corridors, and stairs.
There is Shoplifter, an Icelandic artist who has been in New York for years, who spills a waterfall of color with her work made of synthetic hair on netting on carpet. From one waterfall to another, we move to Janet Echelman with her Study for Butterfly Reststop. Janet, a sculptor and fiber artist, is a master at weaving nylon and polyurethane to create colorful nets.

From the nets and colorful weavings to the equally vibrant lights of Massimo Bartolini with Starless. The lights that, for the Italian artist born in 1967, are the smell of sight.
The stairs of the cloister have instead been invaded by Black Cloud Fashion, the fifteen thousand black moths made of paper by the Mexican artist Carlos Amorales.
A true swarm, motionless on the walls surrounding the staircase, enveloping the observer with thousands of eyes as they accompany them to the upper floor.

But these are just some of the names of the protagonists of the exhibition, which also features Gianni Colombo, Petah Coyne, Ian Davenport, Fallen Fruit/David Allen Burns and Austin Young, Lucio Fontana, Anne Hardy, Thomas Hirschhorn, Alfredo Jaar, Gianni Politi, Tobias Rehberger, Anri Sala, Yinka Shonibare CBE, Sissi, Max Streicher, and Pascale Marthine Tayou.
