Maddalena The Mystery and the Image at the San Domenico Museums in Forlì until July 10, 2022
The San Domenico Museums in Forlì are showcasing until July 10 “Maddalena. The Mystery and the Image.”
The fascinating exhibition path narrates the figure of Maddalena through various historical periods: from the pre-Christian classical era, where she is mostly a symbol of pain and theatricality, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and Baroque, to the 19th and 20th-century representations where Maddalena becomes an emblem of protest and the drama of an era.
It is easy to see how Maddalena has been one of the most used images throughout the history of art, and later in literature and cinema.
The itinerary of Maddalena The Mystery and the Image consists of 12 sections featuring contributions from artists such as Masaccio, Crivelli, Van der Weyden, Bellini, Perugino, Barocci, Savoldo, Mazzoni, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, Domenichino, Lanfranco, Mengs, Canova, Hayez, Delacroix, Böcklin, Previati, Rouault, Chagall, De Chirico, Guttuso, Melotti, Sutherland, Bill Viola.

WESTON. Edward, Brett, Cole, Cara. A Dynasty of Photographers at the Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia until July 24, 2022
The Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia hosts, until July 24, the exhibition WESTON. Edward, Brett, Cole, Cara. A Dynasty of Photographers.
On display are 40 works by Edward Weston, one of the most important photographers of the first half of the 20th century. His works include plastic portraits of nudes, sandy dunes, and objects and plants transformed into sculptures. Alongside his photographs, you can also admire 40 works by his sons Brett and Cole and his granddaughter Cara.
The exhibition narrates the collection of artistic experiences over more than a century of photography, history, and images of a constantly changing world.
The path, set up at the Museo di Santa Giulia, presents 80 works by the four photographers, including their major masterpieces.
The photography of Edward Weston often consists of a stubborn search for purity, both in compositional forms and in the almost obsessive perfection of the image. The author investigates objects in their essence, elevating them to visual metaphors of the very elements of nature.

Cross Collection at the Raccolta Lercaro in Bologna until September 18, 2022
From May 5 to September 18, the Raccolta Lercaro, in Bologna, presents Cross Collection. Collections in Comparison.
The exhibition curated by Leonardo Regano and Francesca Passerini showcases a core of works by contemporary artists from a single private collection, placed in a harmonious dialogue with that of the museum.
Cross collection. Collections in comparison aims to present works that seem distant from each other, which, when juxtaposed, can lead to new insights and meanings.
In reality, this desire to compare works that are very far apart is already a widespread trend in contemporary collecting, and also in that of Cardinal Giacomo Lercaro. Such collecting goes beyond classifications, conventional paths, and easily evident relationships.
This is how new visual and conceptual thematic intersections are born: Cross collection. Collections in comparison is structured in five main sections that address specific themes: the body, the portrait, still life, languages, and some reflections touching on ethical and social spheres, with particular reference to the delicate aspect of migrations.

Crowned Idols at the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum in Syracuse until July 26, 2022
Crowned Idols is on display at the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum, in the province of Syracuse. At the center of the exhibition is a marble idol that arrived in Calabria on loan from the Cycladic Art Museum in Athens.
Crowned Idols is a dialogue between the idol and the surrounding landscape: the Archaeological and Landscape Park of Syracuse, along with Eloro, Villa del Tellaro, and Akrai.
The marble idol, of the Spedos variety, is surrounded by an installation by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, titled “Crowned Idols,” along with other works exhibited in the museum of Syracuse.
The marble works from the Spedos series to which the statue on display belongs feature slender, elongated female forms with bent arms, characterized by a U-shaped head and a deeply incised split between the legs.
The exhibition successfully combines the classical nature of the Greek Idol with the modernity of the Portuguese artist’s installation in which the female figure is the protagonist.

Japan at the National Gallery of Cosenza until June 2, 2022
The National Gallery of Cosenza, until June 2, 2022, showcases Japan, curated by Alessandro Mario Toscano and Marco Toscano.
Japan brings, for the first time to Calabria, the woodblock prints of the great Japanese masters of the 19th century: Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, Hiroshige II, Chikanobu, KyŌsai, Kunichika, Shuntei and many others.
A core of over 100 works, coming from private collections: from Manga and Gafu by Hokusai to the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō by Hiroshige, from the portraits of Kabuki actors by Kunisada to the samurai of Shuntei, from the Forty-eight Famous Views of Edo by Hiroshige II to the visionary tales of Kuniyoshi.
Japan addresses art, traditions, history, landscapes, and in general the myth of Japan, a country capable of stimulating the imagination of all. The exhibition has been described as a “cultural operation” that aims to make its audience feel more cultured and also to provide new insights to facilitate the understanding of others and new cultures.
