Sebastião Salgado is one of the greatest photographers of our time and is the star of the exhibition Sebastião Salgado. Amazônia, at the MAXXI in Rome, until August 21, 2022.

The city is the only Italian stop of the photographic project.

Sebastião Salgado

He was born in Brazil on February 8, 1944, but has lived in Paris for many years.

Salgado studied economics and statistics and decided to fully dedicate himself to photography relatively late, after a mission in Africa.

Humanist photographer, he focuses particularly on capturing socially relevant aspects and broad themes such as workers’ rights, poverty, and the destructive effects of market economy in developing countries.

Sebastião Salgado in Amazônia

Salgado spends months, sometimes even years, traveling around the world to realize his projects.

In this case, it involves a total of 200 shots collected over six years, during which he immersed himself in the most remote areas of the Amazon rainforest to capture and testify to the beauty of these places and the populations that inhabit them.

The Amazônia rainforest covers about 60% of the South American continent, an area larger than the entire European Union.

The exhibition is divided into various sections that gather the main elements of the forest: the rivers, the mountains, the storms, and of course the populations that inhabit it such as the Awá-Guajá, the Yawanawá, the Yanomami communities, the Ashaninka, and the Korubo.

Amazônia is thus a total immersion in the forest amidst the majesty of its vegetation, the power of the mountains, the roar of the waters, and the life of the indigenous populations that inhabit and protect it.

The exhibition manages to capture the immense power of nature in those places and, at the same time, its fragility.
