The arrival of Christmas and the holiday season is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of visiting one of the five must-see exhibitions of 2023 in the city of Turin.
Edoardo Sanguineti The Face of the Poet at GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Torino until February 19, 2023
The GAM in Turin hosts Edoardo Sanguineti The Face of the Poet until February 19, 2023.
This exhibition in the spaces of the Wunderkammer brings together various works, including some portraits dedicated to the great poet by his artist friends.
The visiting path aims to reconstruct, through a selection of works from the rich private collection of Casa Sanguineti, the friendships and collaborations of the poet and intellectual with some of the most famous contemporary artists.
For Sanguineti, while sometimes it is art that draws inspiration from his verses and prose, in other cases it is the writer who dedicates poems and critical pages to his artist friends. Moreover, while the poet’s signature often appears at the end of exhibition catalogs, in other instances it is the artists who illustrate his poetry collections, confirming an intense and fruitful relationship of cultural exchange.

Backwards Ahead at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo until February 26, 2023
The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo hosts Backwards Ahead, an exhibition that presents a core of works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection. These relate to the concepts of time, history, and evidence.
Backwards Ahead, which includes examples of sculpture, installation, and photography, challenges the notion of linear time, on which the Western conception of history rests, through its interpreters.
The title of the exhibition is borrowed from the eponymous work by the artist Kiran Subbaiah, a closed-circuit installation that engages the audience in a delayed control system, overturning the space-time coordinates of those who traverse it.
Through various perspectives, the works presented in Backwards Ahead trace circular and oblique motions, advancing and receding.
In this continuous movement, they render the flow of time reversible, notifying appeals and judgments, and re-imagining the power dynamics between oppressors and the oppressed.

Doisneau at Camera – Italian Center for Photography until February 14, 2023
The exhibition ROBERT DOISNEAU is at Camera Torino until February 14.
The exhibition includes 143 works, all on display in the prestigious rooms of Via San Felice and coming from the Atelier Doisneau.
The exhibition ROBERT DOISNEAU is the result of an ambitious project from 1986 by Francine Deroudille and her sister Annette – the daughters of Robert Doisneau – who selected from 450,000 negatives, produced over more than 60 years of the artist’s activity, the images of the exhibition that tell us the captivating autobiographical story of the artist.

Margherita of Savoy, Queen of Italy at Palazzo Madama – Civic Museum of Ancient Art in Turin until January 30, 2023
Margherita of Savoy, Queen of Italy at Palazzo Madama focuses on the figure of Margherita of Savoy, the first queen of united Italy.
Margherita, beloved queen from the start, imposed her lavish taste in fashion and decoration; her love for music and the mountains resonated in the lives of the Italian aristocracy. She was a spokesperson for activities supporting women and promoted the development of vocational schools and charitable works. The myth of Margherita did not fade with the assassination of Umberto; rather, it accompanied the nation into the 20th century.
The exhibition illustrates the tumultuous transition between the 19th and 20th centuries of the country through the trajectory of this figure who became a female icon of the House of Savoy: glamorous in her rich and excessive toilettes, maternal in her concern for the needs of the people and in supporting their education, a pioneer of new lifestyles that relate to nature and the mountains. Furnishings, paintings, and photographs illustrate Margherita’s private and public world.

Rembrandt Meets Rembrandt Dialogues in the Gallery at the Royal Museums of Turin until April 16, 2023
Rembrandt Meets Rembrandt. Dialogues in the Gallery is the new dossier exhibition at the Royal Museums.
Here, the genius of the greatest Dutch master of the 17th century is celebrated, with a selection of twenty-two works including paintings, drawings, and etchings displayed in the Discovery Space of the Galleria Sabauda from December 14, 2022, to April 16, 2023.
The heart of the exhibition is The Supper at Emmaus from the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris, on loan to the Royal Museums thanks to the policy of exchange adopted to strengthen collaboration between Italian and European cultural institutions.
The work is placed in comparison with the Portrait of an Old Man Sleeping from the Galleria Sabauda, one of only three paintings by the artist present in national collections.
In the two paintings compared, the realistic depiction of the environment and characters, combined with the expressive and symbolic use of light, recalls the innovations introduced by Caravaggio in sacred painting in the early 17th century, promptly embraced by the naturalistic painting schools in various Italian and European centers.
