1 – National Archaeological Museum of Taranto

The MarTA of Taranto, one of the most important museums in our country, is a true jewel in the field of archaeology. Its collection encompasses 6,500 years of the region’s history, with thousands of artifacts ranging from the archaic age to the early Middle Ages, showcasing the faces, traditions, wisdom, and customs of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Apulians, and Byzantines. The incredibly rich collection consists of vases, amphorae, furnishings, and funerary goods, mosaics, and the famous Gold of Taranto, magnificent jewelry including rings, earrings, bracelets, and crowns from the Magna Graecia period.

2 – Palazzo Massimo

It is said that Rome is an open-air museum, and indeed choosing among the many museums and archaeological collections of the Eternal City was not easy at all. Our choice fell on Palazzo Massimo, one of the four locations of the National Roman Museum.
The reason? Undoubtedly the frescoes of the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta and the Villa della Farnesina which have been reproduced in their original dimensions. Just these two rooms are definitely worth the visit!

Palazzo Massimo houses one of the most comprehensive collections of ancient art in the world. Its collections are distributed across the four floors of the building according to a chronological and thematic criterion: the ground floor, first, and second floors are dedicated to the ancient art section; the basement hosts the sections of numismatics and goldsmithing. Among the original Greek works imported to Rome, the Niobid from the Horti Sallustiani and the bronze statue of the Boxer at Rest stand out.

3 – MANU – National Archaeological Museum of Umbria

This beautiful museum located in Perugia will take you on a long journey through seven itineraries that span from prehistory to Roman times, passing through the Umbrians and Etruscans.

The National Archaeological Museum of Umbria is housed in the architectural complex of San Domenico, one of the most important religious buildings in the city, as well as one of the most imposing churches in the entire region.

A must-see is the Etruscan tomb of the cai cutu (3rd-1st century BC) reconstructed in the cloister of the convent with the furnishings arranged in their original position.

4 – MANN – National Archaeological Museum of Naples

In our selection of the 6 must-see Archaeology museums, we cannot overlook the MANN in Naples, one of the oldest and most important museums in the world for the richness and uniqueness of its archaeological heritage. The origin and formation of its collections are linked to the figure of Charles III of Bourbon, who promoted the exploration of the Vesuvius cities buried by the eruption of 79 AD and the project for a Farnese Museum. The MANN houses the Farnese collection and the Vesuvius collection, which constitute the two main nuclei of the Museum.

Among its highlights, we cannot fail to mention the Venus Callipyge, the Farnese Bull, the Farnese Hercules, and the imposing mosaic of the Battle of Issus.

5 – Egyptian Museum of Turin

Royal Museums of Turin, Gallery of the Kings

Although Italy boasts a very high number of classical art collections, we must not forget that it is also home to the second largest collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world, as well as the most important outside of Egypt. The Egyptian Museum of Turin is the oldest museum dedicated to pharaonic civilization. The visitor route winds through five exhibition floors that house about 3,700 artifacts to tell the story of the Museum, its collections, and the archaeological contexts of the objects on display.

Visiting the Egyptian Museum means embarking on a journey through time spanning over 4,000 years of history, encountering invaluable artifacts.

6 – Civic Archaeological Museum of Milan

Last but not least: the Civic Archaeological Museum of Milan. Located in an extraordinary architectural context, the former convent of the Monastero Maggiore di San Maurizio, founded in the 8th century AD, the museum collects testimonies from various ancient cultures: Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Barbarian, and Gandhara.
Many works, of which a selection is displayed in the paths dedicated to Ancient Milan and Roman Milan, come from excavations conducted in the city since the 19th century.
