Paul Cézanne on display in Basel, Switzerland
From January 25 to May 25, 2026, the Fondation Beyeler in Basel will host a monographic exhibition dedicated to Paul Cézanne, a pioneer of modern art and a key figure in a journey that revolutionized painting in its final years.
The exhibition brings together approximately 80 works — oil paintings and watercolors — that narrate the evolution of the artist through still lifes, landscapes, and portraits, with particular attention to the relationship between form, light, and color.

Among the most iconic subjects are the many views of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a symbol of his revolutionary approach to the representation of space.
The exhibition is a rare opportunity to admire fundamental masterpieces of modernity in a scenographic setup in the heart of Basel.

Works and masterpieces on display
Curated by Theodora Vischer and Dieter Schwarz, the exhibition focuses on Cézanne’s last 20 years (1900-1906), featuring enigmatic portraits such as “Madame Cézanne in a Garden,” powerful bathers, Provençal landscapes, and multiple views of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. Oils on canvas, watercolors, and drawings on paper reveal his innovative struggle between vibrant color, changing light, and solid form, influencing generations from Picasso to Matisse. Loans from museums such as the Musée d’Orsay and the National Gallery explore themes of instability and eternity, with thematic rooms recreating the atmosphere of Aix-en-Provence. A rich catalog of essays contextualizes his legacy in modernism.
