Palazzo Strozzi is going digital with Let’s Get Digital!, an exhibition curated by Arturo Galansino, General Director, Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and Serena Tabacchi, Director of MoCDA, Museum of Contemporary Digital Art in London.

The exhibition, open until July 31, 2022, describes the digital revolution in art that has experienced an impressive acceleration in recent years, thanks to the rise of the infamous NFTs.

Let’s Get Digital at Palazzo Strozzi

The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi is a celebration of a new way of making art that has recently impacted even the most traditional markets, such as galleries and auction houses.

From a “physical” art that could be considered elitist in some respects, we have transitioned to digital art, which is more accessible and democratic.

Museums could not escape such a change.

Palazzo Strozzi, which had already experimented with digital art both with JR and with the exhibition “Alter Eva. Nature Power Body” in 2021, with Let’s Get Digital! showcases six of the leading interpreters of the Crypto Art movement: Refik Anadol, Anyma, Daniel Arsham, Beeple, Krista Kim, and Andrés Reisinger.

The historic Florentine palace makes its rooms available, allowing works created to be experienced through computer or mobile device to find – and succeed perfectly in finding – their installation dimension.

But what are NFTs?

To better understand the innovative aspect of the exhibition in Florence, Let’s Get Digital, it is necessary to take a step back and pause to understand what NFTs are.

The acronym NFT stands for Non-Fungible Tokens, which translates into Italian as Non-Fungible Digital Tokens, identifying them in simpler terms as non-reproducible or replaceable digital certificates.

An NFT can therefore be associated with any product on the Internet, whether it is a video, a photo, a GIF, a text, an article, an audio, or a work of art.

The collection of NFTs is stored within the Blockchain, a digital ledger where transactions of all those data that cannot be altered, manipulated, or deleted are recorded. Once inserted into the Blockchain, a digital product can no longer be copied or modified.

From NFTs to Crypto Art

The transition from NFTs to Crypto Art was swift, indeed immediate: in the art world, the possibility of auctioning digital artworks has opened up, with buyers acquiring them for hundreds, thousands, or even millions of euros.

Why?

Because buying Crypto Art primarily guarantees the ability to claim a right over that work, through so-called smart contracts, which are “intelligent contracts” that automate payment upon the occurrence of a specific condition.

Let’s Get Digital in Florence is further proof of how art is indeed changing and how museums can keep pace.
