The Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro presents From Donatello to Alessandro Vittoria, 1450 – 1600. 150 years of sculpture in the Republic of Venice. The exhibition, which began on April 22, will conclude on October 30, 2022.
This is the first exhibition dedicated to Venetian sculpture and not to painting, which is generally the preferred medium for exhibitions, to take place in the lagoon.
The venue: Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro
This noble palace, located in the Cannaregio district, was built in 1424 at the behest of Marino Contarini, a Venetian merchant and nobleman.
It owes its name, Ca’ d’Oro, to the layer of gold – unfortunately lost – that once adorned its facade and is known as one of the finest examples of Venetian Gothic.
The Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro was purchased by Baron Franchetti, after whom it is named, at the end of the 19th century.

The exhibition path
The noble floor of Ca’ d’Oro and the works displayed here offer visitors the opportunity to explore materials, various sculptural techniques, and their expressive potentials.
The exhibition path consists of important loans from national and international institutions and private collections, framing a historical-artistic period that is certainly broad, ranging from the Renaissance to the late Mannerism, which brought stylistic and iconographic changes to the city.

Venetian sculpture
From Donatello to Alessandro Vittoria, 1450 – 1600. 150 years of sculpture in the Republic of Venice is curated by Toto Bergamo Rossi, director of Venetian Heritage, and Claudia Cremonini, director of the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro.
The Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro thus hosts an important collection of works and sculptures created by some of the most significant artists who worked in Venice and its territories between the 15th and 17th centuries.
Among these are, of course, Donatello, but also Mantegna, Antonio Rizzo, Pietro, Tullio, and Antonio Leonardo, up to Jacopo Sansovino and Alessandro Vittoria.

An itinerant exhibition for the city
From Donatello to Alessandro Vittoria, 1450 – 1600. does not end in the halls of the Gallery.
It expands throughout the city, which becomes part of the exhibition path: a special signage for Venice has been installed to indicate the presence of sculptural masterpieces within churches and museums, thus broadening the narrative on sculpture that began at Ca’ d’Oro.
