Robert Doisneau in Turin

Camera – Italian Center for Photography in Turin hosts until February 14, 2023, the exhibition Robert Doisneau.

Robert Doisneau certainly needs no introduction: he is one of the most important photographers in the world and a founding father of French humanist photography and street photojournalism.

This highly successful retrospective dedicated to the French master Robert Doisneau at Camera features over 130 photographs by the author, including some of his most iconic images as well as lesser-known shots, selected from the over 450,000 negatives that make up his archive.

The Robert Doisneau exhibition narrates his career through the recurring themes he addressed, all observed through his lens over more than fifty years: it speaks of war and liberation, work, love, children’s games, music, fashion, and much more.

It features his most famous photograph, capturing the kiss of a young couple amidst the chaos of passersby and traffic in Paris, taken in 1950 while Doisneau was engaged in a photo shoot for a well-known American magazine.

As mentioned, Doisneau is considered a pioneer of humanism.

Together with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau managed to capture and narrate his era through a disobedient and curious gaze.

The images in the exhibition on Doisneau in Turin are perfect in their ability to appear surprisingly spontaneous.

They tell of a time when people sought a new balance within a transforming society, with its rituals and contradictions.

Doisneau, more than anyone, was able to represent “Frenchness” with an ironic and poetic register in which his best subjects are children, lovers, and scenes of everyday life.
