A Unique Exhibition
This is the first exhibition ever dedicated in Italy and the world to Cecco del Caravaggio, born Francesco Boneri: a painter likely born in the Bergamo area, student, model, and for some, even lover of Caravaggio.
It is plausible to think that Boneri met Caravaggio in Rome, after the latter left the residence of Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte.
Cecco del Caravaggio has gone down in history as an enigmatic, restless figure, and also distant from the chronicles of his time, whether historical or judicial.

With Cecco del Caravaggio, Works from Around the World Arrive
The exhibition showcases 19 of the 25 paintings attributed to him, along with two works by Caravaggio and those of other artists who were a source of inspiration for Cecco.
For this occasion, in Bergamo, Capital of Culture for 2023, loaned works are arriving from Italy and around the world: from the Uffizi Galleries, Palazzo Pitti, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the National Gallery in Athens, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica di Palazzo Barberini in Rome, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and many others.

The Rediscovery of Cecco del Caravaggio
The exhibition is an opportunity to bring this artist to light, relatively recently rediscovered thanks to studies initiated by Gianni Papi in the 1990s.
Boneri can indeed be included among the artists who fell into the shadow of history and victims of a sort of damnatio memoriae, despite the undisputed value of their works.
The exhibition at the Accademia Carrara offers for the first time a comprehensive and transversal view of the work of Cecco, as there is still much to discover about him and his work.
The exhibition path presents the fundamental masterpieces in reconstructing the corpus of the author.
There is also the “Expulsion of the Merchants from the Temple”, on loan from the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin: a work that played an essential role in determining the very first core of works by Roberto Longhi and in defining the identity of the pictorial language.
