Man Ray: Protagonist of His Century
Man Ray was born in Philadelphia to a family of Russian immigrants of Jewish descent but grew up in New York. After completing his studies, he rejected a scholarship in architecture to dedicate himself to art.
Still in New York, in early 1908, he worked as a designer and graphic artist.
In 1912, he began signing his works with the pseudonym “Man Ray” and two years later purchased his first camera to capture them.

A great friend of Duchamp, whom he met in 1915, he co-founded the Society of Independent Artists and later the American branch of the Dada movement, which originated in Europe.
He would also become a proponent of Surrealism.
He moved to Paris in 1921, where he focused entirely on photography and published the first Rayographs, photographic images obtained without a camera, which were enthusiastically received by the Parisian art community.
Man Ray. Works 1912-1975
The exhibition currently taking place in Genoa includes 340 pieces, including photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, and films.
The exhibition path groups a core of unique photographs both for their quality and for their provenance from important national and international collections.
Man Ray. Works 1912-1975 is a must-see event for anyone wishing to delve into the period of the avant-gardes of the early 20th century and the extraordinary career of one of the undisputed protagonists of that period.

Man Ray breaks the mold and creates new aesthetics, combining irony and sensuality that emanate from each of his works.
The exhibition at Palazzo Ducale is organized into sections that chronologically trace its biography, from its beginnings in early New York, through the Paris of the historical avant-gardes between the 1920s and 1930s, to the final years of its career and life, spent between the United States and Paris.
