Who was Ugo Mulas

Ugo Mulas was born near Brescia on August 28, 1928.

He moved to Milan, studied law but did not complete his studies. He began frequenting the Jamaica bar, a meeting place for intellectuals and artists. In 1954, he produced his first official report at the Venice Biennale. The following year, his first photographs were published.

In 1964, during the Biennale, the Pop Art movement, which originated in the United States in the 1950s and 60s, was presented to the European public for the first time.

Mulas met artists of the caliber of Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg. In the years to come, he collaborated with many other artists, both Italian and foreign.

He died in Milan in 1973.

Mulas, who began his career as a self-taught artist, quickly understands that being a photographer involves providing a critical testimony of society, and it is this awareness that shapes his first reports between 1953 and 1954.

He captures the suburbs of Milan and the artistic and cultural environment of the early fifties at the famous Bar Jamaica, of which he was a regular patron.

Mulas quickly establishes himself in various fields of photography, from fashion to advertising, publishing in numerous magazines such as “Settimo Giorno,” “Rivista Pirelli,” “Domus,” “Vogue.”
