National Museum of Matera

The National Museum of Matera is the first institution of the National Museum System to join the Artsupp Card.

The National Museum of Matera was established following the merger of two existing museum institutions: the National Archaeological Museum Domenico Ridola and the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata at Palazzo Lanfranchi.

From today, for holders of the Artsupp Card, the three museum locations will be accessible with a single ticket at the cost of only 7.00 euros instead of 12.

The National Museum of Matera actually consists of three different locations. Here they are!

The Regio Museo Domenico Ridola is named after Domenico Ridola, a prominent figure from the early 1900s who decided to donate his collections to the State. Here you can admire the section dedicated to prehistory with materials from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Ages.

The National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata at Palazzo Lanfranchi aims to propose the great work of recovery and study of the artworks of the territory, presenting itself as a living and vital organism, a meeting space, a common house open to all, a welcoming reality integrated into the social fabric.

Finally, the last of the three locations is the monumental complex consisting of the Former Hospital of San Rocco and the Church of the Flagellated Christ.

Musma of Matera

The Musma of Matera, housed in what was once the residence of the Pomarici family, features over 200 works in an extremely evocative environment, juxtaposing modern and contemporary sculptures with the rock-hewn spaces of the Sassi. Here, a century of Italian and international sculpture is narrated.

Casa di Ortega

Casa di Ortega hosts twenty polychrome bas-reliefs that the Iberian painter created in 1975 in Matera, using the most popular and emblematic local craft technique: papier-mâché. The twenty bas-reliefs form two narrative series: “They Passed”, which retraces the Spanish Civil War, and “Death and Birth of the Innocents”, a denunciation of the brutalities of the Franco dictatorship.
