N\u00e9 en 1775<\/em> \u00e0 Crespano de Francesco et Angela Zardo (m\u00e8re d’Antonio Canova, devenue veuve de son p\u00e8re Pietro en 1761 et remari\u00e9e), Giovanni Battista Sartori Canova<\/strong> doit sa formidable culture aux \u00e9tudes et \u00e0 l’\u00e9ducation qu’il a re\u00e7ues au sein du S\u00e9minaire \u00c9piscopal de Padoue. Il devint un habile traducteur de l’aram\u00e9en, un fin connaisseur de la langue grecque ancienne et latine, un grand passionn\u00e9 de l’art oratoire ; toutes des qualit\u00e9s qui n’\u00e9chapp\u00e8rent pas \u00e0 Canova, qui d\u00e9cida de l’amener \u00e0 Rome en mai 1800, donnant naissance \u00e0 une collaboration fondamentale pour les deux hommes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giovanni Battista Sartori <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Le m\u00eame Sartori suivit son fr\u00e8re<\/em> lors de ses nombreux voyages \u00e0 Paris, \u00e0 Vienne et \u00e0 Londres<\/strong> ; pour ne citer que les exemples les plus prestigieux : Canova avait Sartori \u00e0 ses c\u00f4t\u00e9s lorsqu’il se rendit \u00e0 Londres en 1815 pour voir les marbres de Lord Elgin ; ainsi qu’\u00e0 Paris en 1815 pour r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer le butin de guerre napol\u00e9onien, constitu\u00e9 de centaines de chefs-d’\u0153uvre d’art italiens vol\u00e9s, principalement des Mus\u00e9es du Vatican. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 cette occasion que la collaboration et l’int\u00e9gration r\u00e9ciproque entre les deux fr\u00e8res \u00e9merg\u00e8rent, de mani\u00e8re manifeste et historique. Malgr\u00e9 donc la grande amiti\u00e9 entre les deux et l’importance de la pr\u00e9sence de Sartori, d\u00e9j\u00e0 ouvertement reconnue au cours de la vie artistique et culturelle de Canova, il n’a pas manqu\u00e9 de personnes qui ont tent\u00e9 d’obscurcir, voire de ternir, l’image de l’habile secr\u00e9taire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La mort de Canova et son testament <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

En particulier pour la question concernant le testament de Canova<\/a><\/strong> et ses ex\u00e9cuteurs testamentaires ; la modification substantielle fut la cession totale au demi-fr\u00e8re des biens : \u201cdonn\u00e9s les grands travaux du Temple r\u00e9cemment commenc\u00e9s, et \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de concentrer la direction de l’entreprise en une seule personne, cette personne devait \u00eatre l’abb\u00e9, nomm\u00e9 pour cela h\u00e9ritier universel ; mais il devait employer le patrimoine susmentionn\u00e9 dans la construction du Temple, une fois celle-ci achev\u00e9e, il devait avoir le devoir, (\u2026) d’ex\u00e9cuter les dispositions du testament de Rome rest\u00e9es intactes. (\u2026) Le testateur laissait \u00e0 l’abb\u00e9 le droit et la libert\u00e9 de faire aux dispositions susmentionn\u00e9es \u2018les exceptions exceptionnelles \u2013 ainsi le texte \u2013 qui pour des raisons ult\u00e9rieures se r\u00e9v\u00e9leraient devoir avoir lieu selon les intentions\u201d (Malamani, cit\u00e9). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s la mort de Antonio Canova<\/a><\/em>, l’abb\u00e9 Sartori d\u00e9cida de quitter Rome, bien qu’on lui propos\u00e2t des postes honorifiques de prestige, et pr\u00e9f\u00e9ra s’installer dans sa patrie, mais cela ne l’emp\u00eacha pas d’obtenir d’importants titres honorifiques, parmi lesquels on se souvient surtout de sa nomination comme \u00c9v\u00eaque de Mindo, conf\u00e9r\u00e9e en 1826 par L\u00e9on XII. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le retour \u00e0 Possagno<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

La d\u00e9cision de retourner dans sa patrie fut une v\u00e9ritable chance pour les lieux d’origine et de formation de Canova. On doit \u00e0 l’engagement de l’abb\u00e9 la conclusion des travaux du Temple de Possagno<\/em> et la collecte des meilleurs pl\u00e2tres des \u0153uvres canoviennes, entass\u00e9s dans l’atelier romain, les transportant \u00e0 Possagno et y construisant sp\u00e9cialement un mus\u00e9e ; le donnant ensuite \u00e0 la Commune de Possagno avec la demande d\u00e9clar\u00e9e de maintenir et de conserver le patrimoine canovien. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il lui doit \u00e9galement la construction de la grande avenue et de la place du Temple. De plus, il contribua \u00e0 ce que les P\u00e8res Cavanis ouvrent ici le Coll\u00e8ge Canova (1er novembre 1857). Crespano b\u00e9n\u00e9ficia \u00e9galement, tant par des legs de propri\u00e9t\u00e9s terriennes que par des \u0153uvres d’utilit\u00e9 publique. Les S\u00e9minaires de Tr\u00e9vise et de Padoue re\u00e7urent \u00e9galement d’importantes donations. La Commune d’Asolo re\u00e7ut en don la statue de P\u00e2ris. Le Mus\u00e9e de Bassano del Grappa re\u00e7ut \u00e9galement de Sartori quelques \u0153uvres d’art de valeur significative, appartenant aux collections personnelles de Canova<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, Sartori ordonna d’\u00eatre inhum\u00e9 \u201cdans la zone qui renferme les cendres de son fr\u00e8re qui fut et est toujours l’objet sacr\u00e9 et tendre de son c\u0153ur sur cette terre\u201d.
