Antonio<\/strong> Canova<\/strong> \u00e9tait un sculpteur et peintre italien.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u00e9l\u00e8bre et tr\u00e8s estim\u00e9 de son vivant, Canova<\/a><\/strong> avait des commanditaires prestigieux : les Habsbourg, les Bourbons, le Pape, Napol\u00e9on<\/strong> et plusieurs membres de la noblesse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parmi ses \u0153uvres les plus connues, on peut citer Amour et Psych\u00e9, Les trois Gr\u00e2ces<\/a>, Hebe<\/a>, la Paolina Borgh\u00e8se.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aujourd’hui, nous approfondissons l’histoire d’une autre sculpture tr\u00e8s c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, la Maddalena P\u00e9nitente<\/strong>, conserv\u00e9e au Palazzo Bianco<\/strong>, \u00e0 G\u00eanes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canova comme le Nouveau Phidias<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Canova<\/a><\/strong>, dont nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons cette ann\u00e9e le bicentenaire de la mort<\/strong>, n’a pas besoin de pr\u00e9sentations particuli\u00e8res : il est le plus grand repr\u00e9sentant du n\u00e9oclassicisme<\/strong>, surnomm\u00e9 le Nouveau Phidias<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ses sculptures<\/strong> se distinguent en effet par l’\u00e9l\u00e9gance<\/strong> et l’homog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9<\/strong> des traits et des lignes, la d\u00e9licatesse des formes et la parfaite proportion des mesures qui r\u00e9pondent aux canons de la beaut\u00e9 id\u00e9ale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Maddalena P\u00e9nitente<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Elle est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme l’un des chefs-d’\u0153uvre<\/strong> de la maturit\u00e9 artistique du sculpteur<\/strong>, r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 1796 sur commande de Tiberio Roberti,<\/strong> ami de Canova.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cependant, Roberti<\/strong>, pour des raisons \u00e9conomiques, ne parvint pas \u00e0 payer l’\u0153uvre qui fut vendue \u00e0 un autre propri\u00e9taire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s diverses p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties<\/strong>, l’\u0153uvre<\/strong> fut c\u00e9d\u00e9e au milanais Giovanni Battista<\/strong> Sommariva<\/strong> qui l’exposa au Salon de Paris<\/strong> en 1808.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, apr\u00e8s \u00eatre revenue \u00e0 Milan<\/a><\/strong>, elle passa de propri\u00e9t\u00e9 au G\u00e9nois Raffaele De Ferrari<\/strong> et fut ensuite donn\u00e9e \u00e0 la ville de G\u00eanes<\/strong> par la volont\u00e9 de la veuve De Ferrari.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La technique sculpturale de Canova<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Canova<\/a><\/strong> travaille le corps de la Maddalena P\u00e9nitente<\/a><\/strong> jusqu’\u00e0 le rendre extr\u00eamement lisse ; en revanche, le socle<\/strong> de la statue est d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment laiss\u00e9 brut<\/strong> et \u00e0 peine \u00e9bauch\u00e9.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’insertion de bronze<\/strong> dor\u00e9 de la croix, ainsi que le r\u00e9alisme<\/strong> des larmes et des cheveux flottants de la jeune femme, visent \u00e0 \u00eatre une tentative de Canova<\/strong> d’atteindre les m\u00eames nuances possibles en peinture, mais en sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces caract\u00e9ristiques exp\u00e9rimentales, associ\u00e9es \u00e0 l’ind\u00e9niable charme sensuel <\/strong>de l’\u0153uvre, ont d\u00e9termin\u00e9 sa fortune extraordinaire \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque romantique, gr\u00e2ce \u00e9galement \u00e0 son exaltation par Stendhal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
