Among all the books that celebrate the spaces and the incredible collections (how can you blame him), there is however a writer &#8211; a Parisian one at that &#8211; who in one of his works from 1877, transforms an episode at the <strong>Louvre<\/strong> into an indictment against the museum. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h5 id=\"who-are-we-talking-about\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who are we talking about?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>By <strong>\u00c9mile Zola<\/strong>, among the most appreciated French novelists, published, translated and commented on throughout the world. The book is the <em><strong>Assommoir,<\/strong><\/em>translates as come <strong>&#8220;The slaughterhouse\u201d or &#8220;The slaughterhouse&#8221;<\/strong> and published for the first time in Italy in 1878, a year after its release in France. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98061\" style=\"width:561px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/zola.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00c9mile Zola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>The two protagonists, an engaged couple, Gervaise and Coupeau, unexpectedly find themselves with all their guests at the museum on their wedding day. So they begin their tour:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201cDamn! it was cold in there! that room would have made an excellent cellar. And slowly the couples proceeded with their chins raised, blinking among the colossi, the stone, the black marble gods (&#8230;), the monstrous half-woman beasts with faces of death (&#8230;) they found everything very ugly. \u201c <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"623\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/louvre-museum-tour-1024x623.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98057\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/louvre-museum-tour-1024x623.webp 1024w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/louvre-museum-tour-300x183.webp 300w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/louvre-museum-tour-768x468.webp 768w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/louvre-museum-tour-1536x935.webp 1536w, https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/louvre-museum-tour.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Louvre<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>When the group continues in the other rooms, things certainly <strong>don&#8217;t improve.<\/strong> In front of <strong>Leonardo&#8217;s Mona Lisa<\/strong>, <em><strong>&#8220;Coupeau stopped in front of the Mona Lisa, in which he found a resemblance to one of his aunts&#8221;.<\/strong><\/em> <\/p>\n\n<p>The group continues their visit, trudging from one room to another, until they lose orientation and get lost. <em>&#8220;<strong>seven or eight rooms away, deserted, cold, decorated only with severe noticeboards, where an innumerable quantity of broken pi\u00f1atas and very ugly figurines were lined up<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>In the end they manage to leave the museum, exhausted and tired. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h5 id=\"zola-against-the-museum\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Zola against the museum<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>\u00c9mile Zola<\/strong>, \u00c9mile Zola, in his <strong>Assomoir,<\/strong> which is actually a much analyzed and commented piece, carries out a real invective not only against the Louvre, but in general against the institution it represents. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Zola<\/strong>highlights how the public, despite recognizing its value and therefore going to visit it, then feels excluded and discriminated against by the messages that that museum conveys.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Louvre<\/strong>, in <strong>Zola<\/strong>&#8216;s pages, is a class separator that makes those who are unable to interpret its values inferior. <\/p>\n\n<p>The question remains whether after more than a century, <strong>Zola<\/strong>&#8216;s opinion is still relevant. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tmnf_excerpt\"><div class=\"tmnf_excerpt\"><p>Louvre.
