{"id":94146,"date":"2022-11-08T15:37:05","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T14:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/judith-and-holofernes-artemisia-in-capodimonte\/"},"modified":"2023-08-31T15:13:27","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T13:13:27","slug":"judith-and-holofernes-artemisia-in-capodimonte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.artsupp.com\/en\/judith-and-holofernes-artemisia-in-capodimonte\/","title":{"rendered":"Judith and Holofernes, Artemisia in Capodimonte"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artsupp.com\/it\/artisti\/artemisia-gentileschi\/giuditta-e-oloferne\">Judith and Holofernes<\/a><\/strong> is a painting by <strong>Artemisia Gentileschi<\/strong>, preserved in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artsupp.com\/it\/napoli\/musei\/museo-e-real-bosco-di-capodimonte\">Capodimonte Museum in Naples<\/a>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>The episode of the <strong>beheading of Holofernes by Judith<\/strong> is well known in the history of art, as it has already been faced by many other artists and above all by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artsupp.com\/it\/artisti\/caravaggio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caravaggio<\/a><\/strong> in his artwork of 1599, kept in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artsupp.com\/it\/artisti\/caravaggio\/giuditta-e-oloferne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Galleria Nazionale d&#8217;Arte Antica Palazzo Barberini in Rome<\/a>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"two-versions-of-the-artwork\"><strong>Two versions of the artwork <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>artwork<\/strong>, a perfect example of Baroque painting, was created between about <strong>1612 and 1613<\/strong> by <strong>Artemisia Gentileschi.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Artemisia<\/strong> also created <strong>another later version<\/strong> &#8211; still in the <strong>Uffizi Galleries<\/strong> &#8211; painted in 1620. <\/p>\n\n<p>A scene as bloody as that of the <strong>beheading<\/strong>, although not confirmed, for some critics could be linked to the rape she suffered in 1611 by <strong>Agostino Tassi<\/strong>, also a painter and friend of Orazio Gentileschi, father of the paintress. <\/p>\n\n<p>In the rtwork conserved in <strong>Naples<\/strong>, belonging to the paintress&#8217; youthful period, there is a strong naturalistic imprint and some uncertainty in the composition. <\/p>\n\n<p>The rigid position of<strong> Judith<\/strong> &#8216;s arm finds inspiration in <strong>Caravaggio<\/strong> &#8216;s painting of the same name, and at the same time the character of<strong> Holofernes<\/strong> seems to have some reference to <strong>Rubens<\/strong>&#8216;
