Andy Warhol and Naples <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Andy Warhol<\/a><\/strong>, American artist and founder of Pop-Art<\/strong>, visited Naples<\/strong> for the first time in 1975 at the invitation of Lucio Amelio,<\/strong> gallerist, collector and curator. <\/p>\n\n

The two of them met in New York<\/strong> the year before and soon became friends, so that Warhol<\/strong> painted Amelio<\/strong> on his several silkprinting. <\/p>\n\n

Warhol<\/strong> immediately grasped the charm of the city of Naples<\/strong> so much as to define it as the Italian New York,<\/strong> victim of the same decline but also of the same vitality. <\/p>\n\n

Today, confirming the close link between the artist and the Neapolitan city, one of his most iconic artworks is kept in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples<\/a><\/strong>, depicting the very symbol of the city: Vesuvius<\/a>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Vesuvius by Andy Warhol<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The colorful Vesuvius<\/strong> by Andy Warhol<\/strong> was exhibited on the occasion of his personal exhibition entitled “Vesuvius by Andy Warhol<\/strong>” which was held at the Capodimonte Museum<\/strong> in 1985, commissioned and curated by Amelio<\/strong> himself.<\/p>\n\n

Warhol<\/strong> following the aesthetics of Pop Art<\/strong>, characterized by bright and strong colors, reproposes the image of the volcano according to these new canons. <\/p>\n\n

To create the artwork<\/strong> he took inspiration from a postcard and created eighteen editions<\/strong>, all made by hand, each of them with different colors and tones to immortalize the volcano<\/strong> at different times and look for the effect of its eruption.<\/p>\n\n

The return to hand painting should not be underestimated: Warhol<\/strong> had already abandoned this technique for several years and reproposing it for the artworks dedicated to Naples certainly underlines an affection and greater emotional involvement.<\/p>\n

Why the Vesuvius <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The artwork<\/strong>, which would be nothing but a stereotypical image of Vesuvius<\/strong>, acquires a new look thanks to the bright colors used by Warhol.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The extreme chromatic charge<\/strong> of the work is not accidental. <\/p>\n\n

It is meant to be a metaphor<\/strong> both for the impetuous character of a city like Naples<\/strong> and for the destructive violence<\/strong> of which nature<\/strong> can be capable. This dualism was one of the main reasons why Warhol approached the Italian city artistically and decided to make it the protagonist of his art.<\/p>\n\n

The artist borrows a recurring theme of the traditional iconography of Neapolitan landscape painting<\/strong>, previously already painted by great artists of the past such as Joseph Wright of Derby <\/strong>and JMW Turner <\/strong>and makes it Pop thanks to the vehemence of the gesture and the expressive power of the industrial colors that make the image of Vesuvio<\/strong> erupting a menacing and oppressive presence. <\/p>\n\n
