THE Foundation Michelangelo Pistoletto<\/a><\/strong> in Biella<\/a><\/strong> hosts one of the best known artworks<\/strong> realized by the artist,the Venere degli stracci.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Pistoletto, son of art<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Michelangelo Oliviero Pistoletto<\/a><\/strong> was born in Biella 25 June 1933. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

At the age of one he moved to Turin<\/strong> where his father, also an artist, opened a painting restoration studio.<\/p>\n\n

Pistoletto<\/strong>, immersed in art since he was a child, he soon ventured into the first experiments in the sector, later becoming one of the leading exponents of the arte povera<\/strong>, Italian artistic current born in the second half of the sixties.<\/p>\n\n

La Venere degli Stracci <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Pistoletto <\/a><\/strong> made the Venere degli Stracci<\/a><\/strong>, now exhibited at Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella<\/a>,<\/strong> in 1967. <\/p>\n\n

The artwork<\/strong> is an iconic installation<\/strong> by the artist but, according to the anecdotes that accompany its genesis, it was born by pure chance: Pistoletto<\/strong> noticed the statue in his studio, on which rags had been thrown by chance.<\/p>\n\n

The inspiration was immediate.<\/p>\n\n

Venere degli Stracci <\/strong> is made by a plaster cast<\/strong> depicting Venus<\/strong>, the Roman goddess of beauty, and a pile of colored clothes that stands out in front of her.<\/p>\n\n

Order versus disorder<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The naked and white goddess, made even more brilliant thanks to a layer of paint and mica powder, turns her back to the beholder. <\/p>\n\n

Venere<\/strong> is order, impassive in the face of the disorder represented by the colored clothes thrown in confusion on top of each other. The female figure is a symbol of classical art<\/strong> and of the memory<\/strong> of what was once the maximum expression of beauty in art.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

On the contrary, clothes<\/strong> are nothing more than tangible evidence of the rampant consumerism of society.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

If the statue were missing, the clothes would be nothing: she is the one who animates them and gives them life.<\/p>\n\n

La Venere degli stracci: society’s mirror<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The Venere degli Stracci <\/strong> is one of the most relevant works within Arte Povera,<\/strong> both for the “poor” materials<\/strong> used and for the desired and marked contrast<\/strong> between two extremely distant worlds.<\/p>\n\n

On the one hand the female figure<\/strong> and ancient beauty<\/strong>, not subject to the ruthless laws of the time and on the other the unstoppable consumerism<\/strong> of which clothes are a symbol.<\/p>\n\n

Just as the statue<\/strong> remains firm and imperturbable, in the same way the rags are the mirror of a society that changes rapidly and that irreparably succumbs to ruin. <\/p>\n\n

More than fifty years after its creation, the Venus of rags<\/strong> is a work that still offers itself as a starting point for current reflection.<\/p>\n\n
