Antonio<\/strong> Canova<\/strong> was an Italian sculpteur and painter.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Very much known and well recognized in life, Canova<\/a><\/strong> had prestigious patrons: Asburgo, Bourbon, the Pope, Napoleon<\/strong> and various members of the nobility.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Among his best-known artworks are Cupid and Psyche, The Three Graces<\/a>, Ebe<\/a>, Paolina Borghese.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

OgToday, however, let’s delve into the history of another very famous sculpture, La Maddalena Penitente<\/strong>, preserved in Palazzo Bianco<\/strong>, in Genoa.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Canova as the new Fidia <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Canova<\/a>,<\/strong> whose death bicentenary<\/strong> falls this year, doesn\u2019t really need any presentation: he was the most relevant member of the Neoclassicism<\/strong>, he was named as the \u201cNew Fidia<\/strong>\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n

His sculptures<\/strong> distinguish themselves for the elegance<\/strong> and the homogeneity<\/strong> of lines and traits, shapes\u2019 delicacy and the perfect proportion in the measures that meet the canons of ideal beauty. <\/p>\n\n

La Maddalena Penitente <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

This artwork is considered as one of Canova\u2019s artistic maturity<\/strong> greatest masterpieces<\/strong>, realized in 1796 commissioned by Tiberio Roberti<\/strong>, Canova<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s friend. <\/p>\n\n

Anyway, for economic reasons, Roberti<\/strong> couldn\u2019t pay the artwork that was sold by someone else. <\/p>\n\n

After some adventures,<\/strong> the artwork<\/strong> was given to Giovanni Battista<\/strong> Sommariva<\/strong>, who exhibited it at Paris Salon<\/strong> in 1808. <\/p>\n\n

Finally, after returning to Milan<\/a><\/strong>, it was bought by Genoese Raffaele De Ferrari<\/strong> and was later donated to the city of Genoa<\/strong> by the will of the widow De Ferrari<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Canova’s sculptural technique<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Canova<\/a><\/strong> works Maddalena Penitente\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> body until it is extremely smooth; on the opposite, the base<\/strong> of the statue is deliberately left rough<\/strong> and barely rough.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The gilded bronze<\/strong> insert of the cross together with the realism<\/strong> of the tears and the flowing hair of the girl are meant to be an attempt by Canova<\/strong> to achieve the same nuances as possible in painting, but in sculpture. <\/p>\n\n

These experimental characters, combined with the undeniable sensual<\/strong> charm of the work, determined its extraordinary fortune in the Romantic age, thanks also to its exaltation by Stendhal.<\/p>\n\n
