Th\u00e9o Mercier <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Th\u00e9o Mercier <\/strong>was born in Paris<\/strong> in 1984. He trained as a sculptor, painter and photographer<\/strong>, and in his works he mainly uses the technique of collage <\/strong>and ready-made<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Bad Timing<\/a><\/strong>is developed within the indoor and outdoor spaces<\/strong> of Villa Medici<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Bad Timing: cars <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

A Villa Medici<\/a><\/strong> there are cars, swooping down on the forecourt as birds from wounded bodies emit the last breaths of a hardly audible music radio. <\/p>\n\n

Along with cars, bronze chairs can be glimpsed melting in the sun here and there in the building. <\/p>\n\n

All these sculptures<\/strong> left to their own devices, abandoned or crushed between the weight of a heavy stone and the suction force of a helium balloon stretched toward the zenith, represent an enigma whose solution lies in the interior spaces of Villa Medici<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Palaces of Memory <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Moving into the exhibition rooms <\/strong>leading to the ancient cistern, Th\u00e9o Mercier solves this same conundrum by drawing on the ancient tradition of the Palaces of Memory<\/strong>. The sculptures he invites into this paradoxical memory space are hybrid structures<\/strong> of used appliances and amputated marble sculptures from the Villa Medici<\/strong> collections.<\/p>\n\n

This new series of borrowed sculptures, bound with different shibari techniques, expresses the artist’s sadism and pleasure in dealing with the opulent vestiges of the past and the post-industrial remnants of contemporary chaos.<\/p>\n\n
