Almost a pilgrimage through the streets of late antique Christianity, among Arians, councils, exiles, and great renewals in the Church of Northern Italy. A life fit for a film that tells the story of the Vercelli Cathedral Library today, starting from the 4th century AD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reasons for an exhibition <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of the 1650th anniversary of St. Eusebius’s death, celebrated with a rich program by the Archdiocese of Vercelli<\/a>, the Treasure Museum of the Cathedral has also planned a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the cultural imprint that the first bishop has left for posterity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already in 2020, during the pandemic year, a temporary exhibition was planned that was converted into an online narrative, through the social networks of the Treasure Museum Foundation of the Cathedral and the Capitol Archive. A storytelling that continued, with a preview of the exhibition on Google Arts & Culture<\/a> and with specific insights<\/a> for the public, also in collaboration with other entities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But from September 15 until December 19, 2021, it will finally be possible to access the true set of historical reconstruction: the exhibition Eusebius and His Gospels. The Origins of a Library<\/em><\/a> has finally opened at the Museum, organized with the contribution of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Vercelli<\/a>, the Archdiocese of Vercelli, the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Eusebius, Lions Club of Vercelli<\/a>, and in collaboration with MUVV \u2013 Museums of Vercelli and Varallo<\/a> and Vercelli Youth Civil Service<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To tell the man and the Christian hero <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But who was Eusebius? A wise and influential churchman. Step by step, he fought against the Arians, was a key figure in the council sagas, and initiated the evangelization of the Vercelli area and, by extension, the entire surrounding region, profoundly changing the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Cagliari, born perhaps at the end of the 3rd century or at the beginning of the next, he probably studied in Rome where he was then appointed bishop of Vercelli in 345. The first bishop of a large portion of Piedmont, among other things, he introduced the obligation of communal life for himself and for other clergy in search of a monastic austerity capable of giving credibility to his church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A supporter of the purest form of Christianity against the Arians, he suffered exile in Scythopolis in Palestine, then in Cappadocia, and later in the Egyptian Thebaid. Until his return to Vercelli, not before having dealt with political and theological issues in Syria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eusebius and the first steps of the medieval Library <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An exemplary figure, in him we can glimpse the origin of the Capitol Library, a place that still today, among the 260 medieval manuscripts, preserves the Gospel of Eusebius: the Codex Vercellensis Evangeliorum<\/em><\/a>, Vetus Latina<\/em> predating the Vulgate of St. Jerome. Also known as Codex A, the Eusebian Gospel is in a splendid late antique uncial, written on 634 pages of very fine parchment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the 20th century, the manuscript was detached from its binding in order to optimally preserve both. The cover<\/a> always displayed in the Museum is not the original, which has been lost, but a gift from King Berengar to the Cathedral dating back to the second half of the 10th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reality or legend? <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The story of St. Eusebius of Vercelli, also through Codex A and its binding, has resonated within the Cathedral over the centuries. His hagiography was written long after his death, passed down through a series of manuscript sources that, over time, enriched the account of his life with fantastic and legendary episodes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around Codex A itself, legends and superstitions have accumulated, also due to the fact that, once fallen into disuse as a liturgical code, it became a contact relic, with all the devotional responsibilities that this entails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between reality and legend, the exhibition Eusebius and His Gospels tells this and much more, in a journey of discovery not only of a saint but of the history of the diocese of Vercelli, one of the most influential in Northern Italy, from the 4th to the 14th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coordinates <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is open during the opening hours of the Treasure Museum of the Cathedral: from Wednesday to Friday from 3 PM to 6 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 12 PM and from 3 PM to 6 PM, Sunday from 3 PM to 6 PM (closed on Sundays for winter hours from November to March).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of the exhibition, it is possible to organize private and special visits to Codex A of the Capitol Library and other manuscripts, via email at info@tesorodelduomovc.it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
