Anish Kapoor<\/a> <\/strong>is at the Gallerie dell\u2019Accademia di Venezia<\/a><\/strong> with his solo exhibition<\/strong>, Anish Kapoor<\/a><\/strong>, until October 9, 2022. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bond between Kapoor <\/strong>and the lagoon city has always been strong, so much so that the artist decided to open his Foundation there at Palazzo Manfrin<\/strong>, in the Cannaregio<\/strong> district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition,<\/strong> divided between the spaces of the Gallerie dell\u2019Accademia di Venezia<\/strong> and the same Palazzo Manfrin<\/strong>, is curated by none other than Taco Dibbits<\/strong>, Director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anish Kapoor: materials, colors, and themes <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Anish Kapoor <\/strong>is a multifaceted artist who uses materials such as marble, wood, granite, limestone, or plaster<\/strong>. His works are characterized by geometric objects or bioforms<\/strong> featuring vivid colors<\/strong> – a tribute to Indian culture – and mirrored surfaces that reflect or, conversely, absorb light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist’s favorite colors<\/strong> range from blue<\/strong>, traditionally associated with esotericism and religions<\/strong>, to red<\/strong>, which is synonymous with violence and impulsiveness<\/strong>, approaching in strength to black<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black<\/strong> for Kapoor<\/strong>, unlike in Renaissance art where it was a means to exalt light, leads to darkness<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not surprisingly, within the exhibition<\/strong>, set up as a large retrospective of the Indian artist’s career, all his most representative works<\/strong> are displayed, including those made with the so-called Kapoor Black<\/strong>, a material created through nanotechnology capable of absorbing about 99.9% of light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another of the predominant themes<\/strong> in Kapoor’s<\/strong> artistic research is certainly that of skin<\/strong>, which can be represented either by mirrored surfaces or by different materials, inserted into a tension structure and then torn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the works exhibited, Shooting Into the Corner <\/a><\/em><\/strong> and Pregnant White Within Me. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former consists of a cannon<\/strong>, created by Kapoor<\/strong> in collaboration with engineers, that fires real projectiles<\/strong> made of red wax weighing 11 kilograms<\/strong> each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result? An apocalyptic scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shooting Into the Corner,<\/em><\/strong> aimed directly at the entrance, is immediately visible to the visitor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work, considering the current historical period and the war in Ukraine, can easily be interpreted as a reference to it, even though there is no explicit connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a work<\/strong> that plays on tension<\/strong>, on the strong aggressiveness<\/strong> of the projectiles, and on the silence<\/strong> that precedes the shot and the impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnant White Within Me<\/em><\/strong> is instead a more recent creation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a work that, for its visual power<\/strong>, deserves to be admired in person: it consists of a white bulge in the wall that expands its shapes and space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
