Until October 23rd,<\/strong> Casa dei Tre Oci<\/a><\/strong> in Venice<\/a><\/strong> pays tribute to Sabine Weiss<\/a><\/strong> with the exhibition Sabine Weiss. The Poetry of the Moment<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who was Sabine Weiss<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sabine Weiss<\/a><\/strong> was born in Saint-Gingolph,<\/strong> in Switzerland,<\/strong> on July 23, 1924. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She became interested in photography from a young age, which became her preferred means of expression. At 21, in 1945, while living in Paris<\/strong>, she published her first report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting in 1950, she began working at Rapho<\/strong>, the leading French press agency. Here, she had the opportunity to collaborate with Doisneau, Boubat, Brihat, Dieuzaide, Brandt, Ken Heyman, Izis, Kert\u00e9sz, Karsh, Lartigue, Ronis, Savitryed Elkoury, and Janine Ni\u00e9pce. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, she dedicated herself to street photography<\/strong>, capturing scenes of everyday life in the neighborhoods of Paris<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She passed away in Paris on December 28, 2021<\/strong>, at the age of 97.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, she is recognized as one of the foremost representatives of French humanist photography<\/strong> alongside Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Edouard Boubat, Brassa\u00ef, and Izis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Exhibition<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Casa dei Tre Oci<\/strong> in Venice<\/strong> presents the largest retrospective ever held<\/strong>, the first in Italy<\/strong>, dedicated to the photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabine Weiss. The Poetry of the Moment,<\/strong> curated by Virginie Chardin<\/strong>, features over 200 photographs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retrospective<\/strong> is promoted by the Venice Foundation, realized by Marsilio Arte in collaboration with the Berggruen Institute, produced by the Sabine Weiss studio in Paris and Laure Delloye-Augustins, with the support of Jeu de Paume and the International Festival Les Rencontres de la photographie d\u2019Arles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted that Sabine Weiss<\/strong> was the only female photographer in the post-war period to have experimented in all fields of photography: from reportage to portraits of artists, from fashion to street shots with particular attention to the faces of children, and numerous travels around the world<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition<\/strong> accurately retraces her life and the phases of her artistic research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From photographic portraits of musicians, sculptors, and actors: Robert Rauschenberg, Fran\u00e7oise Sagan, Romy Schneider, Ella Fitzgerald, Simone Signoret, and Brigitte Bardot, Annette and Alberto Giacometti<\/a><\/strong>, to the narrative about America and New York<\/a><\/strong> where she arrived with her husband, the painter Hugh Weiss<\/strong>, in 1955. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, street photography returns in the neighborhoods of Bronx, Harlem, Chinatown, and Ninth Avenue<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the United States<\/strong> to the world, with memories of her travels in Portugal, India, Burma, Bulgaria, and Egypt. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabine Weiss. The Poetry of the Moment<\/strong> also presents previously unseen works.<\/strong> This mainly includes the series shot during the winter between 1951 and 1952 in French asylums<\/strong>, in the Cher<\/strong> department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swiss photographer was deeply convinced that photography had the task of representing the human condition<\/strong> and remained true to this truth until the end, leaving us with incredibly authentic shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
