Gianni Berengo Gardin<\/a><\/strong>, one of the most famous Italian photographers, is exhibiting at the Maxxi<\/a><\/strong> in Rome<\/a><\/strong> until September 18, 2022<\/strong> with Gianni Berengo Gardin. The Eye as a Profession.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gianni Berengo Gardin, photographer of reality<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Born in Santa Margherita Ligure <\/strong>on October 10, 1930<\/strong>, he grew up and studied in Venice<\/a> <\/strong>, which became his true hometown, where his grandparents and father were originally from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His career as a photographer<\/strong> began in the early 1950s, when, thanks to a meeting with a publisher, he entered the world of photojournalism<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the exhibition, Berengo Gardin<\/strong> offers us what is known as “true photography<\/strong>“, meaning not digitally manipulated in any way but simply faithful to reality, without being neutral or detached, but – on the contrary – always engaged and involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gianni Berengo Gardin <\/strong>becomes one of the most important Italian photographers of the post-war period<\/strong>, capable of framing in a shot the various realities<\/strong> that present themselves before his eyes: from humanistic portraits to architectural works<\/strong> –  aided also by his friendship with Carlo Scarpa<\/strong> and Renzo Piano<\/strong> – to landscapes, industry, and social themes. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his career, he has held about 300 exhibitions <\/strong>both in Italy<\/strong> and abroad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eye as a Profession<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gianni Berengo Gardin. The Eye as a Profession<\/a><\/strong> – curated by Margherita Guccione <\/strong>and Alessandra Maurodal<\/strong> – features 150 photographs<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shots do not follow a precise chronological order but narrate the significant phases of Berengo Gardin<\/strong>‘s career and life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is, of course, Venice<\/strong> with its alleys<\/strong>, the views of the city<\/strong>, and the Grand Canal<\/strong>, up to the more recent images from 2013 related to the project on large ships<\/a><\/strong>. The result is a gentle and human portrait of the lagoon city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a memory of the industrial world<\/strong>, for example, in the images that depict large companies such as Pirelli, Fiat, Alfa Romeo<\/strong>, and especially Olivetti<\/strong>, a company for which the photographer worked for a long time and captured various aspects: from the headquarters and their architecture to shots that highlight the company’s great social value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrive at Milan<\/a><\/strong>, a city synonymous with culture and social commitment. Here are the portraits<\/strong> of various figures of the time such as Ettore Sotsass, Lucio Fontana<\/a>, Gio Ponti, Ugo Mulas, and Dario Fo. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remaining always faithful to his desire to represent reality exactly as it was, Gianni Berengo Gardin <\/strong>does not miss scenes of everyday life<\/strong> such as some workers at work at the port of Genoa in 1988<\/a><\/strong>, passengers on a Rome-Milan train in 1991<\/a><\/strong>, or a boy playing football in Taranto. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also on display are the shots taken in psychiatric hospitals<\/strong> published back in 1968 in a book created by Franco Basaglia <\/strong>and Franca Ongaro Basaglia<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are documentary photographs<\/strong> about the conditions faced by psychiatric patients in Italian asylums<\/strong> before the approval – in 1978 – of Law 180<\/strong>, known as Basaglia Law<\/strong>, which mandated their definitive closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the exhibition path also includes about 250 books and catalogs<\/strong> created by Berengo Gardin<\/strong> with authors of the caliber of Gabriele Basilico, Luciano D\u2019Alessandro, Ferdinando Scianna, Renzo Piano,<\/strong> or with the magazine \u201cIl Mondo\u201d by Mario Pannunzio<\/strong>, the intellectual who, as the photographer himself admitted, had a tremendous influence on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
