The Zuecca Projects<\/a><\/strong><\/a>, in Venice<\/a><\/strong>, is showcasing Hermann Nitsch 20th Painting Action<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A solo exhibition of Hermann Nitsch,<\/strong> an Austrian artist among the founders and leading figures of Viennese Actionism<\/strong>, who passed away on April 18<\/strong> of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title of the exhibition also describes its content, as it is indeed the twentieth painting action<\/strong> presented by Nitsch<\/strong> at the Wiener Secession<\/strong> in Vienna<\/strong> back in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Hermann Nitsch<\/strong> first presented 20th Painting Action,<\/strong> the art critic Ludwig Hevesi<\/strong> said, \u201cTo every era, its art. To art, its freedom.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is, even today, the most fitting spirit to approach the artist’s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a symbolic exhibition<\/strong> of what it means to test the boundaries of<\/strong> freedom. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nitsch<\/strong> works on these immense white canvases<\/strong> onto which he pours, using the pouring<\/strong> technique, red paint infused with a mystical energy<\/strong> and a visionary intoxication.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting the exhibition<\/strong> is a totalizing experience<\/strong> that envelops the viewer from every angle, making them feel surrounded and thus part of the artworks<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The red color<\/strong>, applied to the canvas so impulsively, creates an irregular and continuous rhythm that results from the ever-present dichotomies in Nitsch’s<\/strong> art, such as: rationality and irrationality, finite and infinite, day and night, form and chaos, stable and mobile. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same Nitsch<\/strong> participates in his works<\/strong>: in creating them, he becomes a priest<\/strong> officiating a rite that straddles the sacred and the profane. This explains the presence, although not in all the canvases, of the white coat<\/strong> stained, dirty, and splattered with color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what is Viennese Actionism?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Viennese Actionism,<\/strong> in German Wiener Aktionismus,<\/strong> is an artistic movement<\/strong> that originated in the Austrian capital in the early 1960s<\/strong> and draws from performance art and happenings<\/strong> while transforming into a completely different practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actionism<\/strong> is indeed much less known compared to the other two forms of art mentioned, characterized by the use of images and themes<\/strong> so strong<\/strong> that they are intolerable to some, including: self-harm, sexual practices, violence as a tool for human freedom, rituals that are biblical between the religious and the esoteric.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artistic actions<\/strong> consist of the progressive transition of artists from canvas to body<\/strong> where initially only paint is transferred and gradually replaced with other elements such as blood, organic materials, waste, or animal entrails.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For these reasons, most representatives of Actionism<\/strong> have faced numerous attacks or accusations that have led them to prison sentences<\/strong> of several years; Nitsch<\/strong> himself was convicted in Austria<\/strong> three times, forcing him to move to Germany.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others who faced severe consequences include Otto M\u00fchl<\/strong> and Rudolf Schwarzkogler,<\/strong> the former expatriated to Portugal while the latter died by suicide at just 28 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
