Chagall<\/a> <\/strong> is at the Mudec Museum of Cultures in Milan<\/a> <\/strong> with Marc Chagall. The Story of Two Worlds<\/a><\/strong>, an exhibition curated by the Israel Museum <\/strong> in Jerusalem<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition<\/strong>, open until July 31, 2022<\/strong>, explores the artistic research<\/strong> and work of the Russian artist, who later became a French citizen, from a new perspective, focusing particularly on his work as an illustrator. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chagall in the History of Art<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chagall<\/strong> was born in the present-day city of Lesna<\/strong>, then Vitebsk<\/strong>, in Belarus<\/strong>, on July 7, 1887. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his paintings, he depicts the popular life<\/strong> of European Russia<\/strong> and numerous biblical episodes<\/strong> biblical<\/strong><\/a> that reflect the Jewish culture<\/strong> from which he himself descended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works of Chagall <\/strong> can be framed within various phases <\/strong> of art history<\/strong>, even though he never officially adhered to any movement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he personally experienced the Parisian movements, moving through the avant-gardes to <\/strong>cubism<\/strong><\/a> and <\/strong>fauvism<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like all his contemporary artists, he left for Paris<\/strong>, which, in the early 1900s, was the undisputed capital of art, and it was there that he approached the School of Paris<\/strong> and its representatives, especially Modigliani<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Meeting with Bella Rosenfeld, Wife and Muse<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The artist had a rather eventful life marked by key events<\/strong> such as the meeting with his beloved wife, who later also became his muse, Bella Rosenfeld<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two met in 1909<\/strong> in Vitebsk<\/strong>, in Belarus<\/strong>, when Marc<\/strong> – just over twenty – was about to leave for Paris<\/strong> while Bella<\/strong>, who was only fourteen at the time, was still a student. They married in 1915 and remained together for life, until the premature death of Bella<\/strong>, which occurred in 1944 while the family was in New York. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chagall at Mudec and “The Story of Two Worlds”<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Marc Chagall. The Story of Two Worlds<\/strong> includes a selection of over 100 works<\/strong> mostly donated by Chagall’s family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition<\/strong> thus retraces the biography<\/strong> and production of the artist<\/strong>: from the nostalgic memories<\/strong> of his hometown that come to life, for example, in the work The Pokrowska Street in Vitebsk<\/a><\/strong> from 1922 to the first meeting with Bella.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He illustrated her books Burning Lights and First Encounter<\/strong>, dedicated to the memories of the woman’s life in the Jewish community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The books, of which the Mudec<\/strong> displays the original drawings<\/strong>, were published after the woman’s passing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Story of Two Worlds <\/strong>thus reflects the multifaceted identity<\/strong> of the artist and the fundamental themes<\/strong> of his work: Jewish origins, Vitebsk, the role of husband and that of the artist illustrating the Bible and various religious places, such as the interior of a synagogue in Safed.  <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To complete the exhibition path<\/strong>, a selection of ritual objects<\/strong>, used in the religious ceremonies of Jewish communities and often depicted in the works of Chagall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
