Steps<\/strong> is the title of one of the most famous installations by Alfredo Pirri<\/strong>, contemporary Italian artist, born in 1957.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alfredo Pirri <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pirri <\/strong> is internationally known for his installations<\/strong> and his artistic research<\/strong> that is extremely multifaceted, encompassing various disciplines such as painting, sculpture, and architecture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pirri<\/strong>, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Milan, and Rome<\/strong>, currently lives and works in Rome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He began his artistic career in the 1980s and during that same period exhibited at the Venice Biennale.<\/strong> By the end of the 1990s, he participated in a group exhibition curated by Achille Bonito Oliva<\/strong> at the MoMA in New York<\/strong>, titled Minimalia: An Italian Vision in 20th Century Art.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pirri<\/strong> has been a lecturer at various universities both in Italy and abroad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steps: work and meaning <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The work<\/strong>, conceived in 2003 as part of the cycle that bears the same name, has over the years been hosted in various locations both nationally and internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steps<\/strong> consists of a spell of mirrors<\/strong> transformed into a gigantic walkable floor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist<\/strong> invites the audience walking on his mirrors to reflect on the relationship between fragment and whole<\/strong>, between oneself and relationships with others<\/strong>. By stepping on the floor, the audience thus becomes part of the work, which translates into a performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mirror<\/strong> is a symbol of multiplicity, of the double<\/strong>. Anyone who walks over it can easily see their own reflective image beneath their feet. One can thus be simultaneously both in singularity and in the collective. <\/p>\n\n\n

Itinerant Steps <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The confrontation<\/strong> and the reversal<\/strong> of the image that arises from the mirrors also applies to places for Pirri<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steps<\/strong> indeed opens and reverses decidedly more traditional environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, it has been placed in religious buildings such as the Certosa di Padula<\/strong> and the Abbey of Novalesa<\/strong>, in cultural spaces like the Centro Arti Visive Pescheria di Pesaro<\/strong> <\/a> and the Yugoslav Cinematheque in Belgrade<\/strong>, in museums such as Palazzo Altemps<\/a><\/strong>, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art<\/strong><\/a>, the Forum of Caesar<\/strong> in Rome, the Museum Novecento<\/strong> in Florence,<\/strong> and also the former thermoelectric power plant of Daste and Spalenga in Bergamo and the former atomic bunker of Tito in Konjic, Bosnia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steps<\/strong> is currently on display at the Chiostro del Bramante<\/a>, in Rome<\/a><\/strong>, as part of the exhibition Crazy, Madness in Contemporary Art<\/a><\/strong>, which is still open until January 8, 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
