This year marks the bicentennial of the death of Antonio Canova<\/strong>, Italian sculptor<\/strong> and foremost among the representatives of neoclassicism.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We take this opportunity to recommend five museums<\/strong> in Italy where you can find the works of Antonio Canova.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Graces at the Canova Museum in Possagno<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Canova Museum in Possagno<\/a><\/strong> is dedicated to the great sculptor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here you can find the three Graces<\/strong> by Antonio Canova<\/a><\/strong>, a true masterpiece of neoclassical art<\/strong> and one of the artist’s most celebrated works. The piece was commissioned by Empress Jos\u00e9phine de Beauharnais<\/strong>, one of the main patrons of the sculptor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canova<\/strong> depicts three maidens, daughters of Zeus and Oceanid Eurynome: Aglaia<\/strong>, the embodiment of splendor, Euphrosyne<\/strong> of joy and delight, and Thalia<\/strong>, representing prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The motif of the three nude female figures<\/strong> embracing was revisited multiple times by Canova<\/strong> in his works. This group translates into sculpture the idea of ‘grace’<\/strong> understood not merely as a category of bodily beauty, but rather as a quality of spirit and feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three sisters are similar in physiognomy, draped in a cloth, and reflect the ideals of beauty sought by neoclassical artists. They do not direct their attention to the viewer but are engaged in exchanging intimate, loving, mutual, and reserved glances. The lines are flowing and soft, perfectly studied, and the goddesses seem to be conversing with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n
