Rembrandt Meets Rembrandt. Dialogues in the Gallery<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rembrandt Meets Rembrandt. Dialogues in the Gallery<\/a><\/em><\/strong> is the exhibition dedicated to the Dutch genius<\/strong> at the Royal Museums<\/a><\/strong> of Turin.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defined as a dossier exhibition,<\/strong> it celebrates the greatest Dutch master of the seventeenth century<\/strong>, featuring a core of twenty-two works including paintings, drawings, and etchings<\/strong> displayed in the Discovery Space of the Sabauda Gallery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition, which will run until April 16, 2023<\/strong>, showcases The Supper at Emmaus<\/em> from the Mus\u00e9e Jacquemart-Andr\u00e9 in Paris<\/strong>, on loan to the Royal Museums<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supper at Emmaus<\/em><\/strong> is contrasted with the Portrait of an Old Sleeping Man<\/em> from the Sabauda Gallery<\/strong>, included in the national collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both works<\/strong> are representative of the youthful phase of Rembrandt<\/strong> and serve as examples of the painter’s mastery in the use of color<\/strong>, the regulation of light<\/strong>, and the poetic conversion<\/strong> of subjects drawn from everyday reality and sacred history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the panel from the Sabauda Gallery<\/strong>, the figure of the old man asleep is immersed in an occasionally impenetrable darkness: only the man’s face and hands appear in full light, illuminated by the faint glow of the hearth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rembrandt is a master of details<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not by chance does Rembrandt<\/strong> exalt details in his works like no other, intensifying their effect in a deliberately unreal manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appearance of Christ<\/strong> to the apostles is constructed precisely on the contrast between darkness and light, which is also mystical light, an image of divine revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the two paintings being compared, the realistic depiction of the environment and characters<\/strong>, combined with the expressive and symbolic use of light<\/strong>, recalls the innovations introduced by Caravaggio<\/strong> in sacred painting in the early decades of the seventeenth century, later adopted in schools throughout Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
